Hello,

I'm new here and in need of some advice.

My Freelander 2, 2007, has an odd problem. It needed the wheel bearing unit on the driver's side wheel replaced. That's done, no problem, only now that is a problem with the brakes, which the garage seems unable to fix.

If I brake lightly at low speeds the brake grinds a little, which can be felt through the pedal. After a while, ABS warning light & handbrake warning light come on and HDC is announced out of use because there is a fault and the grinding in the brakes stop and they seem to work perfectly. Any idea what the problem might be? Really appreciate any advice. I'm not much of a mechanic, as you can probably tell...

Hi Matt.
Take it back to the garage they have not done the job properly, it is either the wheel bearing is not fitted right, or it as failed again right away, could also be the sensor, a lot of the time when the ABS sensor or bearing is fitted some do not clean the area properly, I mean meticulously clean any bits of rust etc will render the ABS as fault, is the ABS clearing the initial start up ie light goes out but once you drive it comes back on if so then it all needs to be removed and checked over.

Thanks Arctic2.
Yes, on starting, no fault, but there is the slight grinding in the brake at low speed. After a bit, warning lights come on and stay on and brakes seems to work normally.

Not 100% sure on the FL2, but could the wheel bearing have been put in backwards? Some bearings are magnetised one side to work the ABS sensor. The car could be thinking that wheel is stationary and activating the ABS pump, getting confused, and deactivating the ABS system. This would explain why the fault appears then disappears. Damaged ABS sensor is another possibility.

In any case, I wouldn't mess about on here - a second opinion would be your best bet. Has the original garage not read the fault codes?
