Nah Nah Nah.....seems to be you missing my point....poor fooker whever started this thread comes on here....posts as first post what he and most other peeps would think is a sensible question (admittedly anyone hanging round on here for a while has probably heard it all before) Gets slagged off for his choice of motor....note he never mentioned he wanted a hobby to get himslf covered in ****e and oil every weekend , or a vehicle for serious off roading so you dont know why hes buying it and probably is for a family motor. Admittedly there are many more family motors to choose from that are probably more reliable and cost less to keep on road.

And every time a new face appears on FL forum gets a barage of abuse for choice of motor.

Peronal opinion and through 25-30 years of experience of various LRs the only practical LR to own as a family motor is a FL...(Would possibly have said an older oil burnin disco until recent hike in veggie oil prices) but a properly looked after FL especially runnin on gas can be a good investment, even if not without its problems....

As for off road ability have never had to have my motor towed out of the ****e but have towed many "proper " LRs...Normally after following my well slagged off...cost me the earth...dont fookin buy it...FL.

Nuff said again at least if your gonna give some advice make sure it is advice and not just ****e....

The guy came on the forum and asked for advice and opinions. That is an invitation to reply with advice or an opinion. (They are both the same difference as far as I am concerned). Yes you are right that freelanders do get knocked by drivers of 'proper' landrovers. Maybe it's because some of them have either owned or dealt with the misery they cause. If you wanted to buy an expensive television wouldn't you want someone to stop you buying one that will pack up after a week? If you had a new boiler fitted in your house would you want to know that it will still be working after the first 6 months? If you answer yes to the two examples you are a 'hippo'-crit. Would you rather pay your money to find out it's gonna break or ask first. Seems to me this guy has his head screwed on as he is asking BEFORE he buys not after like a lot of owners. If you want to blatantly lie to someone to make your sob story sound less painfull don't expect everyone else to take a back seat so some other bugger can get fleeced.

by the way to the guy that asked for the opinion in the first place. Vege oil is 56ppl in tescos and sainsburys. Get a diesal disco or defender and run it on veg oil and derv mixed. Steer well clear of freelanders UNLESS you get a TD4.

Well I suppose after eleven years it's time for an update, wifey's 1800 LPG Freelander is still running, hasn't self destructed, the doors haven't fallen off, nor has it suffered from "they all do that" HGF.

A fill up of fuel costs at current prices £25, and you cover 220 miles, the bulkhead hasn't rotted away, nor the floors, and the VCU and prop are fine, as is the IRD.

So in conclusion, apart from normal servicing, and the replacement of a couple of ABS sensors, it has been completely reliable :D

So how about that then?

Brian :D

It proves that they're not bad. I've had 3 1.8 K series FL1s myself, 2 of which haven't suffered any problems, and 1 did need the head gasket doing. However I'd rather do a K series HG, over replacing all the injectors in a TD4. The K is cheap and easy to maintain, even if serious things go wrong. On the other hand the TD4 isn't so cheap to maintain, and downright costly when things go wrong.

The VCU issues can be eliminated, simply by good tyre maintenance. ;)

Glad yours is giving you good service. ;)

11 years in the life of any K Series, I think you'd expect to do a HG, so you've probably had a bit of luck - but lucky or not 11 years trouble free motoring is damn fine :)

Is not that unusual either with Freelander. Apart from my own ignorance causing VCU/IRD issues 6 years ago, mine's been boringly reliable in the 8 or 9 years I've owned it. Cracking reliable and dependable motor that has cost very little to run and maintain.
