Hi All,

Recently purchased a 1.8L 04 Freelander, was secondhand with about 10K on the clock.

I just wanted to gauge other's opinions before going back to the dealer. I've read through the manual about the ABS system and how the brake pedal will pump when the system kicks in so as to not lock the wheels up. My problem is that my brake pedal seems almost violent when the ABS kicks in, just wondering if this was the same for everyone else, or whether it's something I should get checked.

Yep, it's the first with ABS so maybe it is just me and i'm not used to the effect.

I'll keep a check on it, as it still brakes well... atm :)

The brake pedal can feel a bit violent when the ABS is active. I remember my first car with ABS, I thought the pedal was going to fall off. As Yella says, you'll get used to it.
You could take the Freelander into a field, get a bit of speed up (about 20mph) and then stamp the brake. ABS will cut in, peddle will shake but the car should brake in a straight line.

I feel re-assured now, and when it did kick in it did brake in a straight line still and I still felt like I would have control if it had been required.

I'll just have to start wearing heavier boots !!

When in this field doing a brake test you could always se if the car will steer when under heavy braking. If the ABS is indeed working the car will steer as normal. If the ABS is screwed and the wheels lock then you'll leave huge STRAIGHT ruts in the grass.
I'd like to say you'll have no more problems but you have a Freelander ;)
 
I just hope I don't fall foul of the head gasket issue. I did read that it was just the earlier models and that it was fixed in the more recent ones.

fingers crossed.

I do wish I'd gotten a Td4 though !

Just got my V6 Freelander back from the garage after a head gasket failure. X reg 2000 model, 37k miles, £1600 :(
Yella, I know the Freelander isn't the most reliable car but they have a certain qualty about them I love.

he is rite!! but as long as there is someone out there working on modification to this weakness we should be allrite.

check this guys www.qednet.demon.co.uk they have done some mods on 1.8 and KV6 engine. unfortunately I live in the best southern part of the world :D
 
Hi mark,

Just read the post of nije in which he says to 'O' ring the engine based on his previous experiences as race engine builder. I don't know what this 'O'ringing the engine means but if it helps wouldn't it be the solution for the KV6 as well ??
 
Willo you could be right but I think the block and/or heads may need machining to accomodate the O rings. Mine is back together now and my wallet can't cope with another outlay of hard cash ;)
