there are 2 3mm allen screws which have to be undone, one on each side, then the unit will slide out
(this is only true of original head units, if it's been changed then could be anything)
do not try removal tools or coat hangers, it doesn't work in that way.

As for the U-shaped wire, this is the best tool of choice for the R660 which was the most common head unit fitted by LR (and Rover) up until 2002
