Ye i see where you are coming from now.
I have just read that they are putting a 2.0 in the 4x4 quasqui (lower bhp 148) but no doubt it would be a stock engine and also just seen that BMW are getting 202bhp out of a 2.0 in the 123 coupe twin turbo and 54.3 mpg.

Rubbish.

In fact, LR and Jaguar make Ford a tidy profit. Which can't be said for many Ford compnaies. Got a feeling they might be the only ones.

Fair comment, LR dealer prices are expensive, but compare them to other premium manufacurers and that's not unusual. However, Genuine Parts and LR dealer repairs seem expensive beacuse OE spares and specialist repairs are so prevalent. And whilst it is not as easy to work on as a Defender, the Freelander is simple vehicle to maintain.

The Freelander started life as a design for a Rover people carrier. It evolved into the best selling small 4x4. It took over the market that was otherwise dominated by Japanese brands. As a result, it saved the company from a difficult future.

The designers had a concept and ran with it - keep it light and simple, so no low box and no central diff. No diff? Add TC (traction control with dront discs and rear drums? Interesting!) No low box? Add HDC. (And HDC was just one of a number of neat innovations, some of which are now standard across the LR range.)

Did the concept work? Drive a Honda CR-V and see how much better the Freelander is on road. Drive an XTrail and see how much better the TD4 engine is. Drive a BMW X3 and see how much better the Freelander is off road.

The style was typically 1990's and it needed its two facelifts. BMW injected some much needed quality control. However there were some daring design and style aspects - such as the rear door/screen (neat concept, but really a bit too tricky) and spare wheel.

The Freelander will never shrug off the reputation for poor reliablity caused by the early transmission problems and the K-series head gasket failures, which were apparent in all the vehicles that were fitted with the K-series, such as the Rover 200/400, MG F and Lotus Elise, which seem to have escaped the stigma. LR lost a lot of ground when it misjudged the early transmission problems and concentrated on the rear tyres and pressure. The later components pretty much sorted the problem. In our minds, perhaps LR should have had every petrol Freelander back in on recall for modifeld engine components to solve the HGF issue - but with the quantity involved that might be wishful thinking.

Thanks for your contribution!

Cheers

Blippie - this is not a land rover V everything else fred - compared with All other Land Rovers the Hippo is the runt of the bunch. It is the most unreliable and worst 4x4 that Land Rover have ever produced (maybe with the exception of the latest RR).
whether it is better than a toyota/nissan/ford/peugeot/vauxhall isnt the arguement here.

Sorry guys but you cant call the new Freelander 2 a runt its far from it. We had one of the first Td4 HSE autos that came out ordered way before the realease date, waited ages and well worth the runt. Just in case some of you foke didnt realise the Freelander actually has more advanced software in certain aspects i.e the bluetooth system is far more advanced than RR sport and discovery as you dont need to plug your phone into the system. The new Freelander is a very reliable vehicle which wears its badge with pride. No runt in my eyes & well worth the wait!

Also are you forgeting when Freelander was launched no Land Rover was very reliable. Series 2 disco? Range Rover? Even iconic Defender had its problems! It was only towards the end of Freelander 1 history compared to its stable mates that it seemed like a runt-remember its stable mates were next generation LR's.

Also hope LR dont go indian, I couldnt stomach another british company moving off to India. Especially if ****ty TATA buy LR (that would taint LR image).

Unfortunately mate..i think curry is going to be the main dish in the solihull canteen ( and i dont think it will stay there forever they will just move the plant)...
Cant see any other options, theres not a lot of other choices at the mo.
And they are very good at moving plant ..they took a whole chemical plant from south wales stripped it packed it and reassembled in India.
So a car plant or a steel works would be well easy.
Only good thing is though they would still be building them there in like 50yrs..
When we would all be driving hydrogen cars, you could still go to india and get all nostalgic for the Landrover.:D
D

Thats one thing we can thank ford for. If Ford didnt tie in jag and land rover then the two could be sold individual. Disappionting to say the least. Think LR curry would destroy one of the ultimate brands of vehicle in my eyes, and my following of the company would come to an end.

However, LR followers theres a tiny ray of hope. Remember the stink Defender owners kicked up when LR took away the front flaps. I know from an insider it made LR think twice about what they will do to the old timer in the future. After all its the iconic defender that made LR and if you loose the traditional followers backing by moving to India LR could find a spot of trouble. However money does talk!

One more idea all of us on here should chip in and buy LR, downside is we would be stuck with Jag!Id rather that than see a new dish in the solihull canteen.

LOL!

You think? Disco 2? P38? We spend far more maintaining our Defender 90 than the Freelanders.

Look at the forum for any other model - full of people with problems. The Freelander is no different to any other model - it just it was sold to more people so the problems are more apparent!

Agreed!

Defender is lego like, you could almost have a go without a manual or pointers from other peeps.

The Freelander is a bit more complicated, so more people seek advice from others
