Hi All,

I'm new on here but I have got a freelander 2 (60 plate,100,000 miles) its loosing a coolant (around 1 litre in 6 weeks - 2 month) had a water pressure test and cant see any obvious leaks. would your thoughts now be the head gasket?? would a land rover garage be able to me where the issue is??

it doesn't smoke and drives well.

thanks peeps

Barney

Hi Barney.
I doubt it's the head gasket, I have never heard of a TD4 head gasket failing as of yet anyways, look towards the thermostat, or water pump, maybe also double check all hoses for security of clips etc, can you see any tell tale pink deposits of coolant anywhere.
Check the coolant bottle cap is ok if not change it, also the bottle it's self.

I had only had mine a couple of months ,and the low coolant light came on,it had a full service when I bought it.
turns out they hadn't tightened the cap up properly.

Hi,

the garage I sent it to took the tray off the bottom and water pressure test but couldn't see anything leaking, it pretty much kept pressure which he said could mean a internal issue when the car is running? he did mention gasket at that point..
I will add the garage wasn't a land rover specialist though.

Is there any coolant getting into the engine oil? Any mayonnaise like stuff in the oil filler cap?

Maybe the oil cooler? It was dodgy on my 02 plate and gave those symptoms i.e. normal temps but the engine smelled hot. I had no signs of oil in the coolant or vice versa (I think the oil cooler was clogged up so not feeding the EGR cooler properly) until it failed completely and dumped the coolant into the sump.

I maybe way off the mark though. Hopefully others will be able to tell you if/ how you can check.

Fritz
