Freelander 2 (LR2) Freelander 2 tailgate

LR2 tailgate won't open. I get the small secondary click when pressing the unlock on the key, but not the main click to open. Can anyone advise how to get the tailgate open manually, so that I can replace the switch mechanism. Thanks

Mine only makes one click when opening.

There is a manual release, but it's neither easy to find (it's behind the cover trim), or easy to operate, and you have to drill a hole in the cover trim to get to it, while the trail door is closed.
Here's some pictures of the mod I did to access the manual release.

I've managed to open the tailgate from inside with very fine screwdriver forced down and levered the catch open whilst pushing tailgate hard from inside. Lashings of WWD 40 and it seems to work ok now. Thanks again for your suggestion...

On my list to do is methods to open the rear door and bonnet if failure happens.
