Hi everyone - my lovely Freelander 2 (63 plate with 73K miles) developed an issue while driving home from holiday this weekend - we have been in the lake district - so lots of hills and slow moving traffic - then on the motorway at speed we had what I can only describe as a power lapse - the car kept moving but it felt like a couple of blips - a bit like a deep breath then back to normal - any suggestions? I had a new fuel filter at the last service in May - I spoke to a garage who suggested that I trade it in for a new one ( not helpful) so any help or suggestions would be great - nothing is coming up on the dashboard - no warning lights or anything.

Has it only done it once or repeatedly?
So many things it could be. A useful garage would check for any fault codes that would tell you which direction to look. Keep a record or diary of each time it happened and what the circumstances were.

hi eveyone ...iv just made myself a member to try and find out my problem and funny enough this is the same but mine has got worse..had them blips at 70mph for a couple of weeks but today also travelling home from lakes i took it up to about 80mph on the A69 near hexham on the outside lane overtaking and that was it full loss of power , i managed to get onto the hard shoulder , it did restart straight away but the engine management light was on , so i switched off and phoned green flag , he told me to start it again which i did and the light was off he the told me it had reset itself and would be fine , drove home the last 30 miles at 50mph but was not a nice experience . my garage says to take it in tomorrow and he will HYDRO FLUSH IT as it may be clogged with carbon ..???
any more suggestions would be a great help....

Hi there Timmy this sounds familiar - I am driving to France in couple of weeks and need to get to the bottom of the issue - I have booked the garage the week after next and will ask about hydroflushing - keep me posted please :)

I dont think carbon would do that, I agree with stv123 here that the best would be to get an analysis done and see what faults are stored, or if any readings look strange while running.
Guessing what's wrong often leads to chucking parts at it just to see if "this" works, its expensive and frustrating.

hi , thanks for that , i will speak to garage in the morning and will let you know the outcome ..
cheers..

No carbon cleaning snake oil is going to fix a sudden loss of power. It's far better to read any code and look at the live engine data, rather than waste money on fake engine cleaning products.

If power loss has put the engine light on, then there will be a code associated with it. The code will tell you what's up and what needs replacement.

just wondering if suction when removing fuel cap can cauze this ??
Do you mean that when you take off the cap you hear air sucking into the tank ? If so then this defiantly needs investigating if air cannot enter the tank to replace the fuel being used then it creates a partial vacuum in the tank and the fuel pump will start to struggle, when the vehicle is needing most fuel then it could be starved. its worth following up on this.

yes raywin..
that what happens and its just started this last couple of weeks as with the engine problem ...
thanks , im talking it to garage now will keep people posted..

diannaswr...try removing your fuel cap and see if there is suction there.. will keep you posted on what garage says...

well unfortunately my freelander didnt get sorted tday , but it has been on the computer and he mentioned either the crankshaft or camshaft position sensor a cant remember which one , its booked back in for next week does this sound right ?
also they still want to do hydroflush but im not sure if this really needs doing at 240£ he said he had a camera in engine somehow and it is caked up ????

UPDATE.... PROBLEM...
CRANKSHAFT SENSOR FAULT
( po336 )
new one fitted and shes running like a dream ....cost £140 inc.
parts and labour ..
hope this helps diane , yours sounds like the same prob..
good luck ..
That's good to hear, much better than chucking parts at it.

yep...pleased its sorted but still on my mind about the carbon build up what the other garage said it needed doing ..no too sure it needs it , av started putting redex in each tank of fuel think this should help or waste of money ??

One thing you need to consider is that they told you this needed doing to fix the problem, now you know that it didn't, how would they answer you if you had paid for this and the car was just the same because it still needed the crank shaft sensor.

It doesn't work, so it's pointless paying for some snake oil treatment. If the intake is coaked up, then the only true fix is to actually remove the intake and clean it properly.
