Freelander 2 (LR2) Freelander 2 coolant issues

Good morning everyone,

I’m just about to pick up a 2007 Freelander 2 diesel. Purchased as a project but the plan is to fix and keep. She has a water issue, I’ve not yet laid hands on her but figured if I explain the symptoms relayed from the current owner you may be able to point me in the right direction for diagnosis.

Firstly she’s using water. On local journeys she can use up to a pint. There is no coolant in the oil and vice Versa no oil in the coolant.

Secondly the heating is stone cold all the time. He has replaced the thermostat but this has no made a difference.

Now just through usual “Googling” the main answers seem to be possible headgasket and heater matrix(core) is blocked

Any suggestions on how to best diagnose and confirm my issues would be greatly appreciated xx

Coolant dumping - freelander 2

Hi, my freelander 2 (2007) has had a slight coolant leak for a while that we couldn’t find! Until this last week! It’s dumped all coolant, wouldn’t hold, overheating and heaters not working! It went to the garage where they found a coolant pipe at the back had blew as there was a slight fuel...

It depends on why it's loosing coolant.
If it's leaking, then that's pretty easy to fix.
If the coolant is getting blown out of the reservoir overflow, then the HG is the likely cause. Mine was the latter.

Pardon my ignorance, how does a leak mean no heating, is it Water taking path of least resistance ?

The lack of heating could be a red herring, or it could be that air is trapped in the heater matrix, because the coolant has got below the heater matrix.
It could also be unrelated to the coolant loss, as it's been known for the servo motors in the heater to fail, potentially leaving the blend door unable to move from the cold to warm position.

I'd definitely look at fixing the coolant loss first. Not just because it could (possibly has) damaged the engine, but because fixing that has a good chance of fixing the heating.

My F1 (which has absolutely no relation to the F2) has a coolant loss. The heater will work briefly when the coolant is topped right up, but stops once it starts dropping. There's enough coolant to circulate through the engine, but the heater matrix is fed high up in the system and it appears the coolant takes the path of less resistance and bypasses it.

My coolant loss is actually at the heater matrix, it leaks into the cabin. Once the coolant stops flowing through the matrix, the level stays pretty constant.

As I say, dunno how much this relates to the F2 - but fixing the coolant loss must be your priority I'd have thought.
