Hi All,

Can't wait to get back in a landy, I used to have a G reg 110 and absolutely loved it.
Spent a lot keeping it going but the lack of a drive (was using my grandmas!) forced me to get rid when the turbo went.

Anyway, i'm looking to get a freelander 2 61 plate.

I've looked at 2 so far and they both had rust (possibly just surface rust) on the rear jacking point.
The second one had surface rust on a chassis member at the back.
I got a little paranoid and backed out of buying both of them.
Not knowing whats normal made me little nervous.

Is this normal for freelanders and how quickly would it turn to full blown rot?
If this was your motor would you treat it?

Is there anything else i should be worried about for this age freelander?
I read on this forum alot about VCUs, does that just effect the older freelanders?

Anyway, happy to be here and hopefully a happy landy owner soon.
Many thanks for any help
Nick

Hi, welcome to the forum. I've got surface corrosion on the underneath of my freelander but it's 16 years old so it's doing ok. As far as I know the fl2 doesn't have a vcu. Check out the mot history of any vehicles you are thinking about getting, one without any advisories are the one being looked after.

Cheers dude, thanks for the reply.
Do you know when yours started rusting?

I'm trying to figure out how long it takes to turn into rot.

As above there is no VCU on the fl2 the transmission is completely different, but can be prone to failure of the rear diff, (Google it) test drive any potential buy and listen for any rumbling at the back end, look for a reputable seller prepared to offer some warranty on this.
Rust is not often reported as a problem, but take a good look around. Mine has very little or no rust on the jacking points, some light surface rust on sub frames but nothing that gives me a moments concern.

I seem to get different advisories at each mot. Last year they advised the fuel cradle was corroded but didn't mention it this year, same with brake pipes. This year they say sills are corroded but I've been under it and they are solid but there is a little surface rust. No car is going to be rust free forever if you use it, you just have accept it.

Nice one dude. I think I'm being a little paranoid.

My last car just died from rot. It was underneath and I completely missed it starting. As a result, I see rust now and panic.

Thanks for the advice regarding the rear diff. I'll make sure i test drive.

Regarding the rust, i know there was loads of companies that would professionally waxoil the underbody, anyone done this for their freelander?
