Freelander 2 Auto HSE - 2 Wheel drive issue - Transmission error reduced traction

Recently had an intermittent issue with 'Transmission error - Reduced traction' fault on the dashboard. Got visions of a new sensor / pump / Heldex (!)I've booked it into a Land rover specialist to check the diagnostics but he was surprised when I said the car was in Two wheel drive. We've just had the road resurfaced with that gravel stuff and it definitely spins its way up the road with the traction light flicking on so its definitely in Two wheel drive. Specialist seemed to think thats not possible which is worrying, anyone else had any similar issues?

Had a similar problem with the wife's VW Tiguan. It suddenly went FWD only. I suspect it was the Haldex unit. It was returned to VW under warranty, so I don't know what failed.

If it is displaying "reduced traction" message then it's because the Haldex coupling isn't working due to an error either with itself or one of the systems it relies on for its operation

Therefore if Haldex isn't working you will be front wheel drive

Dropped my beloved Freelander up to Ultimate Land rover in Netherton, they came recommended. Hooked up to diagnostics and found out its an oil pump failure on the haldex system somewhere,. Not a cheap fix (a little under 400) but at least its not something more serious. For reference in case anyone finds this thread, there was no rumbling or noises from the rear, the car drives fine (unless you need 4WD) and the issue started out as an annoyance occasionally. The fault light wouldn't come on for a few days, then a little more and then permanently every time I started the car. Just had that gravel stuff to 'resurface' the road in our street and certainly noticed the difference, there is some 4WD apparently but more like watching a child walk for the first time.... Anyway, in next week and I'll post the results.

Bell Enginerring supply fully reconditioned haldex units for less than that. You have to be careful just banging a new pump in, pump failure is a symptom not the actual failure mode. Have seen cars that have had 2 pumpms in 6 months as route cause not fixed. If the specialist didn't understand it was in 2wd when that fault was, i'd find another garage!!
