Freelander 1 gear box oil

Going to change gear box oil on my TD4 2006 Freelander. Can this be done using an oil extractor through the filling hole? Someone on here said to use fully synthetic oil as replacement, good idea or not? If it’s a good idea, which oil to use? Thank you.

Comma MVMTF Plus 75W-80 fully synthetic, 1.6 litres.

Might be easier to just undo the drain plug (slacken fill plug first!). Then you can check for debris.
