I totally agree with
@andyfreelandy . Like I said earlier in the thread, problems are usually the hydraulics, usually because the release arm is seizing - and easy to fix.
If you don't mind a little work...
Lift the bonnet.
You'll see a big black cover over the top of the engine. It has 3 small and easily accessible bolts securing it that you can see. Remove them and the cover.
Engine is on the left, gearbox the right.
Bolted on the side of the gearbox (on the side facing the front of the car) is a metal bracket that has a smallish round cylinder (clutch slave cylinder) clipped to it - it has a plastic pipe coming out of it routed round the engine bay to in front of the driver and a rod coming out the other side.
The rod pushes against a metal arm (clutch release arm). Follow that arm down and you'll see it disappears through a hole in the side of the gearbox (bellhousing).
It is where that metal arm goes through the gearbox that causes most problems on L/K Series. As Andy says, lubricate where it goes through the gearbox (its advised to drop a couple of drips of engine oil on it at each service).
You can then put that cover back on the engine.
It is likely that that arm going stiff has caused other issues - mainly with that bracket on the side of the gearbox - it can bend and weaken it. As Andy says, and as you can imagine if you have done the above, it is easy-as to replace, even the whole hydraulic system is because it is a 1 piece sealed unit including master/slave and piping that simply clips on - unbelievably simple - no bleeding etc. And cheap.

As said, L Series are becoming more difficult to find, prices are at least 'stable' and they are likely to be getting seen as collectable classics soon. Please don't scrap it. At least sell it to someone who'll appreciate it. A lot of old skool Land Rover drivers are buying Freelanders these days (they won't admit it till there's proof one is sitting on their drive!). L Series are perfect for them, gives them a semi-agricultural feel to their vehicle
