Hello,
I have just taken off the hard top from my 2006 3dr Freelander 1 and installed the soft top. Unfortunately the tailgate window no longer rises and is permanently in the down position. When I press down on the switch there is a little clunk from a relay at the back but when I press up there is no noise at all.
I see from the haynes manual that there is a "roof on" switch and I suspect that this is not closed. Thus preventing the window from rising.
Does anyone know where this switch is located and what part of the roof actuates the switch??
Thanks
Rich

Was the tailgate working okay before going up and down. As a the toggle switch can fail, to confirm swap the toggle switch with the door.
Just realised check your door locking mechanism is working okay. I have a five door model and you can recreate the same practice when you leave the tailgate open and drop the window. The toggle switch will not return the glass up if the door a jar. I would check there first if a problem of the window not going up.

So the mechanism was working before I took the hard top off. I lowered the window, took the hardtop off and then put the soft top on. The tailgate locking mechanism still works OK fine. Do you know where the toggle switch is? Is it in the door or in the steel part of the roof??

Do you have the fob key. As you should be able open the tail gate as you would opening the driver door and the other doors. With the ignition key this will not open the tail gate per say as this only raises the tail gate window only. when you closed the TG door did you hear the lock mechanism engage or does the door jut out a little bit. Also does the door handle work opening correctly with sound of mechanism working.

ah ha - so found the issue. On the three door there is a micro switch on the right hand side body work. This is the "roof on" switch. It's half way up the slope in line with the head height of the rear passenger behind the drivers seat. On the frame work for the soft top there is a special clip which secures the frame to the chassis. I had this special clip the wrong way round and so the switch wasn't closing. I've swapped the clip around to the correct orientation and the switch now closes. This means that the tailgate window can now go up and down!!! hoorah:) Thanks for your help!
