Hi Grumpy Gel

There are no untoward noises from either the IRD or Rear Diff and they both feel to be in good condition, with no excess play, in fact the IRD actually feels very good and I'm suspecting its been changed in the recent past.

You've just listed next weekends jobs drain and refill IRD, Gearbox & Rear Diff, as I've only had the Hippo 3 weeks and the engine & brake services plus wheel spacers to correct a problem with the 17" wheels from a later Hippo fitted to my early Hippo came further up the list.

I can see where youre coming from with the cost of the IRD & Diff versus the VCU and I intend to carry on down the list till its complete.

TBH I have found that this forum is the best information resource for the Freelander as the lack of information available from landrover compared to other models ( such as the 300 TDI Disco ) is unreal.

Thanks for the help

Have you downloaded the LR issued Rave manual for your TD4? They're pretty good. Not sure on the links but a search on here should find it. I don't think there's a single page with all the different Raves on - you may need to skip some till you find one for the 2001 TD4.

Don't forget there's no drain plug on the rear diff-it's either got to be siphoned out or remove the plate on the rear, you'll need some instant gasket to re seal on refitting.

Yes thanks, I've downloaded all 3 of the Rave files, theyre in the How To section ( you never know what you'll need in the future ).

They are pretty good however there is no rebuild info for the gearbox, rear diff or ird.

By comparison all of the info is available to rebuild the Disco axles, engine & gearbox transfer box ( mine's still running all major units untouched from new, except for normal maintenance, @ 230K miles, Had to change brake discs at 210K ).
