My daughter has been up in Hanmer Springs for the new year with friends and it sounds like they've had a good time. However, got the call last night to drive up today and bring her and a couple of friends back because the Hilux they went up in has broken down!

So the Landie has got to go rescue the Toyota :)

As well as rescuing the damsels in distress, I've got to take some bits up so they can rebuild its diff and will probably drag the trailer back with dirt bikes and quad :)

Turns out it wasn't his diff that had gone, it was a wheel bearing - which he found out after I set off, so although he needed the ls diff oil and axle seals I took up - I didn't have the bearing he needed. But I'd bunged my 4 axle stands, a couple of trolly jacks and my tool chest in the car, so left those with him and someone else is taking the bearings up today. Brought the girls home though and it was a nice, if drizzly, 200 mile round trip and day up in the mountains.
 
Went out with 'er indoors the other day in her 02 4 door and couldn't believe the noise from the front left. It has always had something a bit iffy there but I checked it a couple of times and couldn't find the problem.
"How long has it been knocking like that?" says I.
"Only a few days" says she. Yeah, RIGHT!
Needless to say it was first priority today and I discovered the culprit in a few minutes. Near side drive shaft inner CV joint was moving 5-10mm so I pulled it out and the Tri bearing joint thingy came out in 4 bits instead of 1.
No idea if this will last long but the car does low mileage so not too worried. If it fails again I'll go looking for a used drive shaft.

I went along to a Landie meet up tonight here in Chch. Was a local Facebook group event and was interesting to meet people face to face over a pint :) All sorts of people with all sorts of Landies. 1 of the blokes has 14 of them - gluten for punishment! Mine was the only Freelander in the group but a couple of the others were talking about adding 1 to their collection :) This was the first meet up of the group. Looking to make a weekend drive up to Kaikoura in March which will be fun.

The '86 110 County is an interesting car. Its owned by a Kiwi who bought it in the UK when he was on his OE. Originally a V8, he converted it to a 300TDI while in London, then took off home. They headed off north to start with and drove all round Scandinavia, then down through Europe, hopped over to Morocco, drove down to Ghana where they were heading to territory with warring factions - so shipped the car and themselves to South Africa, they drove across SA then up the eastern countries of Africa, across the middle east and over as far as India where they called it a day and put the car on a boat to NZ :) In the whole journey the only mechanical issue they had was a steering box seal letting go :)

I see you and the Fender have one thing in common GG. You are the only LRs in the photo that have spring suspension. All the others use hight adjustable air suspension! ;)

lol, some of the ones on air actually have pumps that pump and bags that hold air as well :)

Actually you're not quite right there Nodge, the G4 Disco3 has had springs installed.

A D3 on springs. What a waste. The D3 is a much nicer vehicle when running on air suspension. LR made a batch of very basic D3s that didn't have any of the air or other off road gubbins. To me that's like having a 2WD Evoke or D3 Sport. Just my opinion of course, being an ex D3 owner.

Evidently it hasn't got the terrain response - no round dial on the console and a few other bits from 'standard' D3s but has various other bits not found on standard. If I understood him correctly, that's the way the G4 cars were from the factory.

Ah so it is a base model.
I'm not sure on the spec of the official G4 D3 (possibly HSE?). However I've looked at a couple over the years. They were fully loaded V8s with everything you could possibly need, including air and Terrain Response. They were also bright orange in colour.

All proper G4 event cars in Tangiers Orange had air suspension

There was a G4 Limited Edition I think but that also came on air suspension as you didn't have Terrain Response on base spec coil sprung cars (5 seat only)
 
I don't know anything about them, just going by what he was saying.

Its VIN is SALLAJA436A395357

It was sold new in Japan in 2006 and first registered here in 2015.

Looking at http://www.vindecoderz.com/EN/check-lookup/SALLAJA436A395357

It says:
Cologne V6 4.0 EFI (SOHC)
Suspension - Front & Rear Coil Suspension [027CI];
Paint Colours - Tonga Green [904];

Having a quick look around, it does appear that if it did leave LR as a G4 car, it would at least be Tangiers Orange!

However, it also looks like the D3 could be ordered with a "G4 Challenge Pack" - maybe that's what this one had.

Summer snow capped mountains, Beech forests, waterfalls, headwaters of the island's mighty braided rivers and squawking Kea alpine parrots up to their mischief. Lovely place to go for a coffee and lunch :)

The Freelander took 4 of us in air conditioned comfort from home at sea level up to 740m at the Arthur's settlement without a hiccup and performed great as always.

Quite a trip for the oil burner....

Our wee Fiesta took us from Golden Bay all the way over the divide to Westport today.

Looking at houses up the coast tomorrow.

It loves it :)

Even got to overtake some campervans on the (very) very long straight bits!

It'll be taking us to Mt Cook, down through your favorite hydro valley and down around coastal Otago over the next few days :)

That's a very scenic journey. It will take a lot longer to get your bits for a Landie delivered to the West Coast. You'll need a good garage/workshop as well - you won't be able to do any work outside because it will be raining.
