Free Wheeling hubs for a freelander

The Freelander drive system was intended as an automatic 'get you out of trouble' facility, not as a high powered all wheel drive.

Passing all of the power to the rear wheels really on a permament basis would give the IRD a headache. It really would need cooling then!

Why are you trying to complicate things ? If your rear wheel drive system is knackered just leave it in front wheel drive. Most cars are front wheel drive now, and with the weight of the engine and transmission over the drive wheels you will get better traction.

Oh i detect a lot of sarcasm here!

Tell your friend or your brothers girlfriends uncles sisters daughter that the final drive on all freelanders upto FL2 are NOT the same.

Prior to the TD4 in late 2000 the final drive had a different ratio. This was understood to be the cause of transmission wind up and subsequent failure of VCU and IRD (i think )

LR changed the final drive ratio and since few problems - so if you're cannibalising a scrapped FL beware - you may just be putting the problem back that the prop shaft and VCU were removed to get around.

Infact it may be that the prop shaft VCU were removed because there was a problem in the first place (ie IRD is about to die in a bank balance attacking way) and this is a short term way of keping the vehicle on the road.

Heed the warnings well - if you have just bought it without the bits attached then take it back. If you have performed the mod then tell your insurance company it is a modification of the vehicle.

I have given this idea consideration, and having taken into account the nature of the Freelander and its drive-train, I have come to the conclusion that two freewheel hubs should be fitted to all Hippos from new, one on the left rear hub, and one on the front right hub. For left hand drive Freelanders, one would of course fit them to the right rear and front left hubs.

Once the di-lithium crystals in the VCU warm up, the effects should be obvious to all.

It front wheel spun on gravel once.

Oh well it's bound to be 2 wheel drive then eh. Get your "friend" to go to his local Landrover dealer armed with that little nugget of info, & tell him to demand they resurrect his 4 wheel drive capability pronto. Maybe he could also suggest that they do a recall on all the Freelanders to fix this problem.

so front wheel drive with the engine and transmission over the drive wheels will give better traction than 4 wheel drive ?

I think not

One feels that people like Optimus Prime ought to be under supervision before being allowed to walk among us, let alone to drive among us.

It has to be a wind-up .... surely ...

CharlesY, I have modified my earlier post, just in case there was any confusion at all as to whether I truly believed this, or whether I was sarcastically questioning what had been posted by ianda12.

apologies for any confusion this may have caused. Unfortunately, sarcasm doesn't always come through to clearly on these posts.

Me, sarcastic ? Yeah right.

Well that's a relief .....

I can drive out there without THAT worry!

just back to the usual worries like vcu failure, ird failure, injectors, uneven tyre wear, water in the boot, knocking sounds, rattling sounds, vibrations, tc warning light, abs warning light, to name but a few

so front wheel drive with the engine and transmission over the drive wheels will give better traction than 4 wheel drive ?

Yep, spot on Opti, that one was almost as good as "my front wheels were spinning, so I must only have 2 wheel drive"
