Hello all - I am a new member and a strictly amateur enthusiast, working to bring our 1982 diesel Series III into good order. I need to improve my brake servo performance: I do get some feeble assistance from the normal air-intake, but not much. I have heard that a Ford Transit 2.5tdi alternator (1984-2000) has a built-in vacuum pump which can be used, but that it also needs an oil supply. I was wondering if any of you had ever done this and general opinion.

There are alternators with vacuum pumps that don;t need an oil feed - i'd do that rather than try and run an oil feed and return. Go to the local sparky (auto electrician) and talk to them. You would be amazed what a friendly attitude and a couple of questions might turn up.

That's interesting. Thanks. I get the impression that this isn't a regular question though - I wonder how other Series owners find their servo performance? Is mine unusually bad, or do people have other ways of improving it? Just curious.

IF the flaps/linkages are not set up exactly correctly then at best you get little vacuum at worst you get no vacuum AND lots of smoke .
The system when working to optimum is fine ...but 30/40 years of wear doesn't help .
Saying that i have no problems in my S3 88" ...but it does run a Transit diesel lol .

My servo works fine as far as I'm aware but the brakes still need a firm shove compared to modern cars. It could be down to your expectations perhaps?

A more powerful servo will not make it stop any better - just help pedal pressure

You can fit a vacuum pump off some other cars ( cannot remember which ones, despite being told the other day ) which is suppost to help the brakes and engine work better but i've never tried it. I will give it a go once i've got my mot sorted.

"IF the flaps/linkages are not set up exactly correctly then at best you get little vacuum at worst you get no vacuum AND lots of smoke"

This may be my problem. I have OODLES of smoke and little vacuum. By 'flaps' do you mean the tipping disc (Is that the butterfly?) inside the air intake pipe? The thing that opens when the accelerator is depressed? It does seem to be fully shut when the accelerator is not touched, as it presumably should be, but what adjustment can be made? It is also very oily, which doesn't seem healthy, given that it's meant to be putting clean air into the engine. ???

Also, on that (butterfly?) housing, there is an inlet pipe for a servo hose. There is also one at the back-of-the-engine-bay end of the air inlet pipe. Should hoses be attached to both of these? And another to the vacuum tank? There is ANOTHER inlet on the air intake pipe which at the moment takes a connection from the breather on the rocker box.

Sorry to be so ignorant - that's why I joined the forum!

I don't have intake flaps, but I do have a Ford alternator with a vacuum pump, works perfect. :D:D

heres a few cars you might find in a local scrappy that do have oil-less vacuum pumps on them

ford transit K - W reg
isuzu trooper
daihatsu fourtrack ( these also have a power steering pump built in ) :D
bedford midi van
peugeot partner van and citroen berlingo
chrysler neon and some voyagers
ford escrot 1.8 diesel van MK5
ford mondeo 1.8 petrol MK1
bedford rascal
suzuki carry or super carry van ( the sooty vans ) :D

A bit OT..but when I used to own a classic 1990 range rover, the PAS pump died. Dealer wanted £900 for a replacement....then local auto electrician told me it was the same PAS pump used in a Ford Transit van. Ford dealer charged £170 for a new pump...fitted perfectly. Makes me wonder how many other expensive LR parts were also Ford bits that could be got for less money.

Any idea which model Ford that alternator is from, mad git? Sounds useful.

Dunno, I didn't put it on. To be honest it galls me a bit, that there is a bit of Ford in "Larry", but it's much better than summit German......
