if you have the cash then fair play to you although if you have just bought the car and intend to take it to a dealer or indy every time something needs doing you may be in for an expensive ride as they can be fussy little tarts. the coolant is very easy, i may have over complicated it a bit

plenty of help on here if you do want to do jobs yourself, if nothing else, treat yourself to an all comms diagnostic kit.

have you got a copy of rave ? thats your first port of call, somebody will pop up with a link to download a copy or have a search, just got to get scran

the hoses are the easy part, as they should be the clip and quick release, i have never taken out the drain plug from the block but its shown in rave
 
I need STC50519 power steering fluid. Is it ok to top up PSF as opposed to flush and replacing it?

Meanwhile Ive been quoted £150 inc labour to flush and replace coolant, is this steep considering they are claiming car needs 13 Ltrs?
 
i've never touched my power steering fluid, i would guess you would be ok to top up if its low but i would guess at some stage it would be a drain and refill but you would need to look in Rave for the exact answer. i cannot stress enough to get yourself a copy of rave, its is far superior to mostly any other manual for any car i have seen.

as an idea i have attached a few pages below.

i like the inugel expert which at 50 % dilution would cost roughly £50

Motul Inugel Expert Ultra Engine Coolant 1 Litre | eBay

typical OAT coolant from halfords, again £50 roughly, you could purchase deionised water to be special

Halfords | Halfords OAT Antifreeze Concentrate 5 Litres[object Object]

in the manual where it says something like general electrical precautions, when you click on that it takes you to the relevant part of the manual.

basically 2 screws to drain, although one on the block is tucked away and i've never managed to find mine but haven't looked either, squirt with a hosepipe, one screw to bleed, although bleeding can take a while as you need to wait for the stat to open to be sure to get all the air from the heater as it will blow cold until it does.

your call really, the worst you could do would be not to bleed it properly and run the engine with insufficient coolant, over heat the engine which will do serious damage. in reality, as long as you keep it topped right up during the bleed and keep an eye on temps, its a piece of cake...

Ref power steering fluid, I just drained out the whole reservoir by pulling the pipe at the bottom of the reservoir and refilled with ATF Dexron 3, bled PAS system ( turn steering lock to lock few times) run it for a week or so, then repeated same procedure.

£150 does seem steep IMO, you can buy a 5 litre of concentrated coolant for about £15, maybe add another litre or 2 of concentrated (call it £20, you DONT need LR branded stuff, as long as it meets required specification) then add water to make up your 13 litre system.
I changed mine (TD6, incl bleeding the system) in less than an hour having not touched the cooling system on it previously and that included packing tools away :)

I think to be sure you can just get your arm down to the coolant drain which is engine side of the rad in the passenger side and mine undoes with my fingers but you could probably use a coin or if it's not pressurised you could pop off the top hose to see what's in it.
I catch my coolant in a large plastic storage container which is about 24"x12" so I don't have to remove the under tray

Once you take coolant out like this you will need to blead the system.
If you are sure it's just clear water then choose your coolant and book it in to your weekend

If you spill any antifreeze don't let any pets drink it as it will kill them a bit

Put some Bitrex in it, it'll stop pets and kids ...

This is the thing I bought fluid from halfrauds and when I checked the gauge, there appears to be no coolant and only water that remains. I have no idea what fluid may currently exist or had been there and dont want to risk mixing. As said below, I have not got the golden balls to DIY it >?

Thanks I know your info is very useful, if I am honest, I aint got the goonies to DIY this one, especially given the potential issues which could arise.
 
Thats got to be your call, i am possibly being alarmist saying you could cook your engine but it could happen so better to be safe than sorry.


once you have given all your money to your local garage, cant afford to eat, have sold your children and your grandmother, you will start to get more adventurous, and thats only after a month of ownership :D:D

you should put your location on your profile, you never know you may be around the corner from somebody who will happily let all your coolant out of your engine for you..
 
Thats normal, when i said keep an eye on your temp i meant during the bleeding cycle, the temp gauge is balanced so it always reads in the middle between a range of temperatures, it only really moves around if its cold or really hot

mixing coolants will turn to gunk i think rather than corrode, why dont you let the engine cool, drain out some coolant to see what it is and then once you know, top it up again with water and bleed the system and go and buy some to do the job or if you are worried still, take it to the garage and let them do it

did you read the page from rave i posted on how to do it?

Just buy a cheap coolant tester test tube and take a bit out the header bottle then you will see what's in the system ;)

I got one of these 6 or so months back, you will need a second mortgage ( :rolleyes: ) tells you what coolant is in it (OAT, propylene glycol etc), you should be able to tell by colour/cleanliness and will tell you the freezing point of the mix that's in there.
