Flat spot and air con whine?

Can't find any other mention of this and it even sounds stupid to me but here goes...

Our car's just started this strange behaviour - when accellerating, more noticably uphill/hard, the engine hits a flat spot at fairly low revs and the internal fan (presumably the air con) starts to whine as if I have turned the fan up. Continuing to accellerate, the car picks up again until the next gear change is required and then hits another flat spot.

As I say this has only just started to happen - my wife usually drives it - but she did report that there seemed to be excess smoke out of the exhaust and it seemed less powerful driving up hills.

Any clues? I know this is going to be expensive but any pointers as to what to look for would be appreciated, I am loath to get ripped off by the dealers unless I really have to.

Thanks for the information. I had a look this morning and yes, the short thick elbow hose coming from the right-side of the engine - haven't got a clue what it is but it is thick and black :) - has a split in it.

I'll try sealing it tonight with some duct tape and see if that has any effect.

The whiney/windy noise by the way was exactly the same with the air con on or off. It just sounded like the interior fan was blowing harder - even though I couldn't feel any discernible difference.

I'll post back what happens. Thanks everyone.

PS Any ideas where to buy a replacement from - is it only stocked by the dealers?

Last week I tried it also to put some duct tape around but it won't hold as there's that oily wind blown through the hole and the tape doesn't keep up.

You're dead right - the tape won't stick. It makes a lovely farting noise to upset the neighbours when you set off though :)

(FYI the hose was £6.10 at my local Landrover dealer.)

This is a very common problem on the td4 sleves, have a good look that non er the clips are touching the rubbers , i modded mine ,i put rubber grommets on the protruding nuts that cut into the turbo rubbers ,they are called 20mm blanking grommets [think electricians use them] fitted them over the protruding nuts, Willo cut a part of the plastic engine cover,as this to can vibrate and chafe the rubber,so well worth a good look. . . .and best oh luck. . .:)

I used some "self vulcanising" insulation tape, It aint the normall sticky pvc stuff, Its a stretchy rubber that ,when stretched arround summat, welds itsell together.;)

bloody good stuff to chuck in the door pocket to use as an emergency hose repair kit. itll hold water and air hoses to get yer somewhere if (when) one o the hoses goes pop~!;)

well to be honist Ive had it years:eek:

RS Components do it stock No408-9518 £1.91 fer a roll of it 19mmx33m

Oh! they also do some Class B 130 Deg C polyester tape. rubber thermosetting adhesive... good resistance to solvents:rolleyes: ;) :D

Nope! different stuff... the stuff you mean is just a pvc wrapping tape that relies on the overlap to keep it in place. this rubber stuff bonds itsell to erm....itself
