Hi guys, I have just bought a discovery 2 and within a few days I got the flashing M &S lights on dashboard, after reading lots of pages on the forums I have tried to get this fixed but to no avail, So far I have spent a fortune this week I have had the battery and alternator tested at an auto electrics garage and they were fine the I took it to a land rover specialist were I had the gearbox serviced also full engine service then put on the autologic computer which said it was the faulty xy switch, bought a brand new one had it fitted yesterday and nothing has changed still in limp mode with the flashing lights the garage said sorry we can't fix it ??? and still charged me for the work Any suggestions welcome thanks

was gear box working ok before lights came on ,what was old oil like ,auto logic wouldnt know whether switch or harness to it was faulty does selector indicator lights align

Hi there, gearbox was working fine then when lights came on went into limp mode switched of and back on drove ok again then next day same again but then wouldn't reset at all.
Lights up when in P and R
N doesn't light up
D doesn't light up
3 Doesn't light up
2 lights up D
Nothing changed after having a brand new switch fitted ( proberbly nothing wrong with the old one )
Don't know what the oil was like as I left it at the garage a few days.
Rang another garage today they said it might be the harness above the gearbox and wanted £550 to change it but wouldn't guarantee this would fix it but suggested I should try it. Already spent £850 on what feels like fresh air so far

Thanks the garage said over the phone it was at least a 3-4 hour job and they would have to drop the gearbox to get at it sounded very dubious they haven't even looked at my car

Had the M&S lights up on my d2 the other day, after I had shorted the interior light trying to change the festoon bulb-once I located the fuse and changed it all was good again-I think in my case it was a bad earth causing this (only guessing),but might be worth checking your earths are good contact. My read out was fine while this was going on but seemed locked in third gear-limp mode I assume

is there a good chance this could be the fault and not anything more serious like the ecu or bcu because I don't know whether to get more involved in trying to fix it or get rid and cut my already heavy losses which would be a shame because its in good order bodywise and engine is sweet

In my case I am sure it is bad contact somewhere.Once I shorted the festoon lamp,I lost the radio and odd things were happening with the immobiliser, like having to press the fob twice to extinguish the red led on dash, then the m and s lights started flashing-found fuse and changed it and all good again.Wish I could help more, but I would check all leccy connections and earths-even pull the plugs apart and remake connection-costs nothing to do this.

thought about buying a cheap voltage meter tomorrow and have a go at checking all the wires I can get at don't know what I am doing but should get and idea if something is live or not always good to try things and read up on them.

Hi I was driving my self potty with this fault on my dad's disco for months. changed battery xyz switch checked levels all plugs gear box control unit but eventually sorted it. It's normally the loom. It chafes out on the metal p clip on top of the gear box. it's really simple to remove and fix just take the trim off electric window switches. unscrew the four screws behind it re and unplug them behind that there are a couple of plugs 3 I think ( did it a few weeks ago ) take the gear selector knob off and lift the surround. Unplug it too and feed the cable through to where the other plugs behind the window switches were.
Then get under the wagon you will need to jack it up unless your name is Kate moss then you'll probably be fine on the deck. Unplug the xyz sensor ( can be a little fiddly but take your time and look at how it unclips you don't want to brake it) the there is another plug just a little further towards the back of the box on the same side twist the plug and that will come off too again try not to brake it but these can be a little stiff. Next on the other side is a plug ( the only one on that side of the box) unplug that. Then grab the loom and follow it up over the box best to follow it from the xyz side over the box. You will find a metal bracket holding the loom with a 17mm bolt holding it In place remove this bolt and gently guide the loom out. The only thing left now is the grommet pop that out should be able to do that with your fingers then feed the plugs in the cab one at a time trough the hole. Once you have done this it should be laying on the floor under the wagon pick it up. And remove the silver wrap if you cut the tape and unwrap the silver heat resistant wrap the plugs will fit trough it and you can use it again. Carefully check the wires under this you may need to take some of the inuslating tape off the ends of this run. there will be one or more with the rubber sheathing damaged cut pop some heat shrink on it solder back together and shrink the shrink tape back up re fit heat protection. I then taped corrugated conduit to the p clip to stop it happening again. Re fit in reverse and voila !!!

My hair is growing back Nicely after months of pulling it out over this blasted fault continuity testing didn't show anything as it's an earth that normally wears through and doesn't normally cut it completely.
