Couple of quick questions if anyone has messed about with flamer plugs?

I need to get the flamer plug for my perkins engine in my SIIa connected up - I'm risking flattening my battery every time I start without it in these current conditions. The previous owner used to remove the air filter and clip a bit of paper onto the air intake, set it alight and start it that way!

The flame plug is fitted into the inlet manifold with one spade terminal on it - do I connect this up to the switch and the other side of the switch to a feed from the battery? Assuming that the flame plug is earthed as it is fitted into the engine block?

I think I know how to connect up the small fuel reservoir, not sure if I can use rubber hoses tho?

Eyup moonie tis a long time since had owt to do with flamer plugs but if i remember rightly you have to connect the diesel up so it drips onto the plug then press the button to get the plug hot enough to set fire to the diesel, spade connector on plug to switch or button then live, prefferably a button so you cant leave it switched on,diesel drips on to plug, bursts into flame, crank engine aWay you go,sorry but i cant for the life o me remember how the diesel side of it works now [must be gettin old] OI who sed that! I THINK the little pot fills up and has a bypass back to the tank if i remember rightly but not sure, but how it starts the diesel flowing i cant recall sorry mate however if you keep a lookout for CHARLSEY on here he,s a dab hand at this stuff + he,s a good sort an wil help if he can,,,,,,,,,,,,,hope this is of help ,,,,,dave

I dont know what the kit looks like, but most older engines just had a heater element screwed into the manafold and it worked fine.

In relation to wiring, most switches are wired through a heavy duty relay, the heater element is going to use a fair bit of amps so it may melt it if you dont. And yes it should earth on the manafold and run the live from the battery to the relay and use it to supply the current, with the switch used to energise the relay. Stick fuses in it off course, both sides incase it sticks on and burns the car out.

You cant just use rubber hose, use proper fuel line, but not that braided white stuff it goes hard and leaks, total ****.

Sound, thanks very much for the advice chaps. The switch I have is a push to hold one, so I will go and fetch a relay from the local scrappers and get some fuel line and crack on with it. No point having a landy in this weather if I can't start the bugger!

Cheers. :)
