FL2 will not start and all seems to be ok

Last week, after work, I unlocked the doors, got in my car (FL2 diesel) docked the key and pressed start.
And nothing happened.
Lights were on, dashboard was lit as usual, all breakers ok… but nothing happened.
I tested everything I could think of. Battery ok, starter motor works (when power applied directly),
windows go up and down, there seems nothing wrong with the clutch sensor. Pressing start with the clutch down, nothing happens. When i do not touch the clutch the power goes off.
It seems as if the start interruptor (?) does not switch off, the fuel pump and the starter won’t work.
The Freelander is taken to the Landrover garage, with a spare key. There they say the car doesn’t work. It won’t start.
And they have been saying so for a week and a half.
I have tried to find a thread with a similar problem, but cannot find one - too many threads with “ won’t start”.
Does this sound familliar to anyone?

Hi Madmustang, there is nothing really special happening when I push the starter button. The lights do what they are suppost to do when you start the car. All lights come on when I enter the key (fob?), put my foot on the clutch and push start. The glowing spiral light comes on, and goes away as expected. Under the bonnet I think i hear a clicking sound in the fusebox, but it is faint. And my hearing is not so good…
The lights do not go out as they do when the starter engages. I have a navigation device connected to the cigaret lighter socket. Normally that loses power for a second, but I don’t think that happens now.

Other than using the wrong pre-starting technique, it should still start.
It does sound like the starter solenoid isn't able to carry the starting current, so it doesn't crank over.

When starting the FL2, you should allow the system check to complete before pushing the clutch down and pressing the start button a second time, not doing so can cause CAN bus errors.
 
How you getting on with this? I have had car problems myself so haven't been able to post, What voltage is your battery? This happened to me in Nov/Dec turns out my battery was only giving out 11.5V not 12 or 12.5v so the car would not start, Changed battery and hey presto it all works
 
Check the -ve strap from battery to bodywork. If loose / corroded all the low power stuff may still work but starter solenoid and starter motor will not. It is a good idea to fit a supplementary -ve lead from battery to the starter motor. ( plenty threads saying how to do)
