FL1 TD4 manual 2005 gear oil leak problem

OK... been doing som studying. Found this in an old post.

"the drip from the IRD and running down to the gearbox low point was in fact - the common rail switch.
With the acoustic cover off the leak is visually undetectable - nothing wet anywhere. The inlet and turbo piping hide everything. The gearbox is under the common rail switch but the top of the gearbox was dry so the leak was finding an obscure path to the bottom of the bell housing. It is awkward but you have to try to get your fingers under the switch to check for wet/damp. This fix for this problem was to tighten the switch - done!

Is this a clue? And what/where is the "common rail switch"?

If it's the rail sensor leaking, then that would explain the large amount of fluid loss.

Presumably tightening it or replacing it if the body is leaking will solve the issue.

But then it would be a diesel leak - not a gear oil leak - right?
 
Difficult to tell from the video in post #1, but it does look like it could be diesel - inconclusive.

I'd say it is very much worth checking before ripping the gearbox out!

I had a really good one with my '99 L Series diesel - I was driving along when smoke/steam started coming out of the bonnet. I pulled over immediately and shut the car down. Looking under the car there was lots of dubious liquids dropping down.

On examination a fuel return hose had blown (perished to leaking) and the oil filter had worked itself loose, both at the same time! I think the fuel leaking onto something hot giving the smoke was the car's way of telling me the engine was about to seize if I don't stop quick :D

Thanks for interesting inputs! I’m pretty sure that it is gear oil leaking - not diesel, but then again - it could be both! Will have a good look before I pull everything apart.
