Hi everyone, new to the site so apologies if this has already been asked (couldn't find it in the search).

I have had my FL2 for about a year and it has been great apart from about 2 weeks ago it's started making a noise from the front (sounds middle to RH side area). The noise is like a whup whup to rumbling type of sound if that makes sense? It gets faster when accelerating, doesn't stop when braking, wee bit noisier when turning but not much and gets looder the faster you go.

Had it at the mechanic who said it was RH driveshaft needing replaced and tie rod end needed done as well. Both replaced, no difference. The old driveshaft he replaced had no visible wear on it.

Been back to mechanic and he asked if it had an oil change recently, which it hadn't but the oil service light was on. He reckons it probably needs flushed and an oil change? Could this be right?

I originally thought it was the RH wheel bearing as it's that type of noise but when on the lift there was no play top and bottom and a bit side to side so he ruled that out.

Has anyone had this issue or any ideas?

I'd be asking for the original drive shaft to be refitted, as there obviously wasn't anything wrong with it, and they click when faulty, not make the noise you described.
It's not on you to pay for his shoddy diagnostics.
The most likely source of the noise is the PTU, which unfortunately doesn't get oil changes, so the bearings fail making noise.

It's not the engine, and flushes aren't needed and should be avoided. Regular oil and filter changes are all that's needed for this engine.

Thanks Nodge68,

Yeah I will make sure I'm not getting charged for any further work till my costs are covered :)

I take it doing an oil change on the PTU now would be too late and I likely need a new PTU?

Very wise. There are too many people providing shoddy workmanship these days, at the expense of unwary motorists.
Unfortunately once the PTU has started to make a noise, then a replacement is the only course of action yo take.
Contact Bell Engineering in the Birmingham area, they are the specialists for Freelander drive line issues.
