Hi All, First time posting on this site but I've been here lots of times reading up on people's opinions before I purchased things (plus the site has nice land rover photos which is good too).
I've a 1972 S3 with a 19J 2.5TD engine but otherwise standard. I fitted a Fairey overdrive from another old vehicle. Its working fine but has a horrible "backlash" noise - what I mean is that if I'm accelerating hard its fine, if I decelerate hard its fine too but if I'm in-between (e.g. slowing down a bit or try to cruse) there is a horrible grating gnashing noise which beats all the other noise (of which there is a lot admittedly).
I'm considering pulling the overdrive out and having disco diffs installed which would do a similar gearing job (especially with the price of new overdrives)
My question to anyone who knows about Fairey overdrives is: Could the noise problem be the coupling bearing or clutch sleeve? I think these are replaceable without re-building the overdrive?
