Disco 2 Fitting new TD5 timing chain guides - how hard?

Had the sump off last summer to do the oil pump bolt, found a small piece of beige plastic which would seem to indicate that the timing chain guides are starting to break up.

So ideally, I'd like to replace them.

Q: what's the minimum amount of dismantling needed to do the job?

Does the crank pulley/damper assy have to come off?
Head off?
Sump off?
All of the above, or only some?

You have to remove just the parts which will let you remove the engine front cover that's all... the head stays in place that's for sure ... i dont remember if the sump was removed or not cos my mechanic did the job

hi, you dont have to remove the sump, just be careful you dont break the sump gasket when you remove the timing cover.it can all be done by just removing viscous fan, rocker cover,crank pulley and timing cover. its a fairly straight forward repair.

Question ... what do I do with the stud (6)? Looks like that stud will stop me sliding the cover out towards the front grille once everything else disassembled.
Does that stud connect to the head or rocker cover? Do I just go at it with a stud remover once rocker cover off?

hi, should just be enough room to add another nut and lock the two together to remove the stud.

hi i know the post is old just after an update how things went. i have a nasty rattle on my td5 and ive found part of the tensioner in the sump so i assume its that making the noise. what steps did you take to remove the front cover? head off?

You dont have to take th head off to remove the front cover and replace the guide and tensioner... check the workshop manual repairs section

Well my chain is rattling like a bastard, I have access to topix and it says to remove the head but I love a short cut

Which bit? Looking in "ENGINE - Td5" section in RAVE, all I see is ...

Yes what's there is not very helpfull you can see the guide and tensioner from point 13 at "timing chain and sockets" but i know for sure that the head must not come off but iirc my mechanic removed the sump but s it's explained in post #3 that's not compulsory either

to do the job properly youd remove the head and slacken sump,you could get away with slackening the sump only but youd be sealing top of timing cover to an already compressed gasket
