I own a 2008 Defender and would like to fit fog lights,do I need new wiring, or is the existing wiring loom designed for the purpose?

On a Defender, there is no factory-fitted wiring for front fog (or driving) lamps, it has to be added.
There is a Land Rover 'Auxiliary Wiring' Accessory Kit (STC53208), Installation Instructions here - http://topix.landrover.jlrext.com/topix/service/document/70573
Or, if you're capable of it, you can make-up a loom and install it yourself, from cable, sleeving, connectors, etc..., bought from an Auto-Electrical specialist., such as -

The Genuine switch (as included in STC53208) is available separately from Land Rover, as part number YUG000540LNF
The connector to fit the switch is available from a couple of sources (including me
)BUT... YUG000540LNF is an earth-switching switch, which must be wired as Land Rover intended, if you want the switch's night-time and 'tell-tale' illumination to work properly.
This diagram shows it being used for front driving lamps, which can only be used with main beam.
To use it for fog lamps, you would take the feed to terminal 86 on the relay, from the sidelights, instead of the main beam warning lamp.

If you get one of these DRL light bumpers, https://www.powerfuluk.com/land-rover-defender-front-bumper-led-drl-square-type.html which come with a wiring harness to plug into side light feed- could you wire it into the rear fog lamp feed instead of side light feed? I see lot’s of people commenting on wanting separate front and back fog lights, but with the fog I drive in, I want to be able to see as well as be seen so am very simple in that respect: is their fog? then fog lights lol

Do you really need them?
I've driven with front fog lights and the difference is hardly noticeable.
Just a way to earn money as an optional fashion accessory.
Then there is the drivers who have them on all day trying to mimmic DRL's.
And to make matters worse they then leave them on at night too. Dazzling everyone in a narsissistic way.
I'm pretty sure it is illegal to drive with front or rear fog lights on unless visibility is less than 100 metres (rule 236)

hahahaha - yeah people who have them on during the day should be stopped by the police and made to put their genitals on the hopefully hot lamps... sadly some may like that...
Fog lamps make a huge difference on lower down cars, as they are low and you do not get the reflection - which is my main problem
with the defender and fog now on motorways when you have a ferry to catch and been forced to “miss the boat slow”, in Wales trying to get to where you are staying before last orders, and been in grave danger of a dry evening () and on windy country roads early in the morning / late at night not being able to see jack as the lights on the defender are so high up they just reflect the light back.
you almost need to get the reverse of pop-up lights and have them as pop-down lights to get them even low when not offroad lol

Most front fog lamps are pretty useless. It's why manufacturers started removing them and putting DRLs in the same positions.
The question is, do you actually want fog lamps or extra high-beam spotlamps? The two are very different.

Why is that - is the front bumper on a defender still too high for an effective fog light? or is it because they were budget chinese crap?

In thick ‘pea soup’ correctly positioned front fog lamps work very well at nighttime instead of dip beam which gives flare, unfortunately nowadays even in daylight fogs and dip beams are also switch on by some drivers, I don’t know what they expect, so it’s foggy I must have fog lights on, the same driver that have the rear fog on in stop start traffic, even going through tunnels
Fogs are usually install below the bumper as the factory fitted items on my disco (which I’ve never used fortunately), although my old RR had factory fitted spots below the bumper
If u need more light when using main beam then driving lamps are best, they have a good range in distance plus width, which spots with their pencil beam don’t.

Yes, the white light reflects off the water droplets and creates a white out, the yellow pierces the fog for reasons of which I have long forgotted lol

found the modern white /blue lights also useless on unlit roads the light seemed to disperse rather badly shortening the viewing range than when used on normal lit roads
I've found the modern LED dips are very good at cutting through fog, as there's no light bleed above the dip cut off. Main beams on the other hand simply blind you, as all the light bounces back at the driver.

HI Currymunster, loved your rantlet! Just wanted to show some love to a fellow driving rules pedant! Personally, it ****es me off too, but then so does people driving bonnet first into parking spaces and reversing out of them! Although it could just be m upset by that one! I am looking at fog lamps fro the front as the side illumination from my headlamps was not included in the spec! However, the 100m rule will apply unless I simply can't see bugger all! But they won't stay one when I can... promise currymunster! Honest! Have a great day!

Hi Team, I'm thinking of getting these or something similar and pointing them down, mounted in the top, or even in the bumper, cutting the holes is not an enormous problem, what do you think plusses and minuses? Lottie's SVX spots are fantastic, but the headlamps are pretty terrible really and they don't show the edge of the road, its manageable when there is a white line at the edges, barely, but without hose guides or in fog, scary really! Great ideas, great solutions and simple nonsense all welcome!

Pulling into a space and reversing out really winds me up too!
Reversing into a main road is also illegal.
As with the lights your looking at they don't say what they are. Fog or DRL's
Front fogs need an illuminated switch and can only come on when lights come on.
DRL's should be wired to come on with the ignition .
But must extinguish, or reduce power by 50% when lights are turned on.
Happy days....
