Ok so I need to fit my mud shields under the front wings. I seem to remember someone saying you need to fit spacers where they bolt into the bulkhead to stop a build up of mud/water. Is that correct or do you just bolt them up tight?

Originally they are bolted up to the footwells but it makes a horrible mud trap. If you use slightly longer bolts and put an extra nut on as a spacer the water can drain away.
 
I need to do this on mine but have the added probelm of the wing "flap" has rotted away so I need to make a new one of those first. I know originally it is spot welded on but I am assuming that I will be fine to rivet the replacement in place?

That is exactly the part I am referring to, there is very little of it left on mine but I have some 3mm ali I was going to bend to he correct profile and then rivet in place, should take a long long time for that to corrode away. Then of course I will have to repaint the wing tops to cover the rivets. Never a simple job!
 
I’ve just done mine. YRM Solutions sell the bracket for fixing the mud shield to the wings. Originally tried fixing with Gorilla Epoxy glue but it’s way too cruddy to stay secure. You could spot weld or what I did was secure with three 5mm rivets. For creating a space at the bottom a nut would work but as suggested elsewhere on this subject I simply fitted a tap washer as spacers. Means you don’t need longer bolts. YRM sells all the correct nuts and bolts. Mud shields need regular TLC I put body under seal on them each summer/ autumn cos they take a battering from crud. They’d work better if they were longer and wrapped under the bulkhead a bit to protect the footwells more.

I have galvanised ones to fit so am hoping that they will last a little longer than the standard ones, but will still be covering them regularly in underseal or similar.
 
I never thought about it as I could have had mine galvinized when I had all my cappings etc done.

When I fitted mine [made them myself from galven sheet ] I trapped a rubber flap between the shield and bulkhead,this hung down far enough to protect the footwell and outrigger from crud flung from the tire
 
I don’t need them. I used standard front mud flaps and extended them about eight inches with eva foam. Nothing can hit the footwells and wear away the underseal. Keeps it clear for inspection and touch ups too.

Straight forward when you offer one up. The straight end of the bracket goes to the sill (the bolt that holds the bar). The bent end uses a bolt inside the inner wing. Cant remember what the bolt does but its a long one through the chassis.

The extension is on the top. Just a piece of that 10mm lock together play mat.

Gotcha. I’m going to try that. Living in the country the road crud in winter is bad on side roads etc.
