Hello

I would like to replace my condensor and points in my 1974 SIII 2.25 petrol with an electronic ignition system. What would you reccomend? (basic unit, replacement distributor, replace distributor with wasted spark system etc)

How best might I waterproof the engine? after wading through a river 2 weeks ago I cut out and was stranded before the advancing tide before a mate with a diesel disco rescued me!!!!

Regards
Cameron

point A) don't do it
point B) get a marigold glove stick it over yer dizzy .you'll notice it has a recepticle for each lead including the HT one. secure with 'o' rings (grunt 2006)

Back in 1900 and frozen to death we used to fit sparkright systems inside the vehcle on the inside of the bulkhead on rally cars, but the best idea for the dizzy is a rubber glove as slob said. silicon sealant on the fingers is good too...

I've just replaced the points on my s111 with a Pertronix / Aldon system that fits inside the dizzy - works fine. I got it direct from an American company at a total cost of around £45 including shipping (from Southampton I think), which was about half of the cost of buying it from a UK supplier.

I'll dig out the details later if you're interested

OK found it - they're called 'Retro Rockets' and I ordered my Aldon / Pertronix Ignitor for my series 111 via their website;

http://www.vintageperformance.com/retrorockets/

and paid via PayPal - although I think you can also pay by credit card.

The part number for the one to fit my Ducellier distributer was EP-142 and the total cost was $81.15, including shipping from their warehouse in the UK(!), which worked out to £43.96 in total.

I think the UK suppliers charge over £90.

I do like the idea of fit and forget; no variance in timing settings due to wear, no intermittent contact. Hopefully powerful, consistent spark. Have had some starting problems, worst of which was in front of the tide two weeks ago so as part of my waterproofing exercise considered this option.

Really appreciate your opinions though, why would you prefer points? What is this "Landy thing" you talk of? should I wear horsehair underwear? Is this an Ammish thing? :D

points go wrong ,you can fix them
electronics go wrong , yer fooked
points get wet, you dry them
electronics get wet , yer fooked

electronic might, and i stress might! give you a stronger spark but when its goes wrong yer right in the brown smelly stuff. and when it do go wrong its cost you another 50/60 quid to fix. new points about 50p

The ignition system can, and will if it can, be a **** to fault find on especialy when you are finding your feet with it. With points fitted fault finding is relatively simple and even if your not sure it is very cheap to keep a spare nearly (that way you know they work) new set under the seat. This allows you to work slowly through the whole system until you find the fault. When your in the back of beyond in the brown and smelly there are few Landy drivers that will be able to ascertain if their electronic thingy-m-jig is fecked or not and even fewer who will carry a spare.

Fit and forget - this is what most folks do, they just remember to change them at regular intervals (mine every 1500 miles)

As for the Landy thing - if you need to ask the question you will never understand the answer.

Finaly- Slob barbed wire is sooo last year. It's got to be razor wire or nothing.
