Fitting a TD5 Auxiliary fuel tank into a TDI 90

just got back from a metal fab shop used the guys TD5 to measure off for the measurements of some storage lockers i plan on building rear ward of the passenger door and in front of the wheel arch and it don't half stick down from the chassis rails. He reckons he can make me a larger ali tank that would not stick down reasonably cheaply so I might have a TD5 tank going spare i need ti keep the tow ball mounts in the chassis free for my removable tow dropper as well.

Does anyone need a TD5 90 tank? Whats the going price? I have one kicking about I got for mine but I will not be bolting it in hangs too low for my liking

Right. I'm about to go ahead with this conversion. I'm in no rush and don't have all the parts yet. I also have not decided if I'm going to use it as an additional fuel tank or as a fresh water tank (possibly for a shower etc).
I'm going to try and keep a record of what I do and list part numbers etc as so far this site has been a great help. I have found out the cost of the pre made tank as others have mentioned but at roughly £550 all in it ain't cheap. So first job is an exhaust swop as I have been waiting for mine to begin blowing - I'm bored of waiting now but it cannot be far away. Also as I'm soon to waxoil my Landy I would like to start cutting and fabricating before everything is coated black.
I'm looking at Richard Chassis - TD5 mounting brackets so I'll let you know how I get on with those - Failing that I can cut the metal up and have someone weld it. I might regret starting this halfway through but I feel the end results will be worth it - & I hope to have at least £250 left from what I would spend on the ready to fit version.
So wish me luck!! :boom:

Dave, I got a front runner tank for £350 it's not as big at 45 litres but cheaper and much easier to fit. It goes opposite side to main under passenger seat but doesn't lose you your battery tray under the seat.. Something to consider.

Hi Cartoonhead. mmm left hand tank for a 90? Are we talking new or used here and if used what for (Diesel/water etc). £350 is a bit more than I planned on paying for the job, but I am interested. Do you have more details & pictures?
Cheers Dave.

It's new - I got it from frogs island 4x4 give them a ring and ask for Sally (You can say Guy said to give her a ring but not sure if she will remember me or not :p) if you are interested, they will fit it for you too if it's a standard chasis they have a bloke who can fit them in about 3 hours so not much for labour if you dont want to do it yourself.

It's for fuel, and it comes with a pump and a switch on the dash that you use to pump fuel from aux tank into the main tank, the only downside really is that the filler is on the opposite side so if the fuel pump at the garage wont stretch to the other side you have to pay then go to another pump the other side or fill up the aux tank and then pump it through and then fill it up again on the same side which takes a bit longer while you wait for it to pump through.

I will take some pictures when i get back from work tonight if you are interested? As i said it's a cheaper option as it is designed to fit a 300tdi chasis so you dont have to worry about fabricating anything or moving your exhaust around, only downsides are slightly smaller than td5 tank and filler cap is other side.

Hi. I talked with Frogs Island and I think the one they sell now would be different to the one you have. Same 45 litre but it's gravity fed? Also they have one left at £300 all in (not fitting).
If you could drop me some details/pictures of the one you have I can go from there.
I'll try to Private Message you my email address.

Cheers Dave.

Some 110s were fitted with dual tanks and just had a changeover switch to use one tank or the other. The fuel gauge and warning light were switched to read from the tank currently in use. You could use this system but have separate gauges for each tank if you wanted.

Alternatively you can rig the plumbing such that the engine always runs from one tank, with a transfer pump to refill that tank from the other one, which is what the OP did. In this case the fuel gauge will show the fuel level in the original tank (and go up when the transfer pump is on.) A second gauge for the reserve tank is optional.

What would be really neat is a 2" gauge with dual needles to fit in the original space and show the contents of both tanks at once.

Has anyone done this the other way around....moving the electric gubbins from under the drivers seat in a TD5 and fitting a TDi tank in its place?... It would be neat with both fillers on the same side?
