I've not got a fan at the moment and was crawling up a slippery hill the other day when a saw the temp gauge go a tad above half. I want to ne on the safe side so was going to fit a viscous fan unit. What do you think?

My first question has to be why was the fan removed and have you still got it?

Refitting the viscous unit takes a matter of minutes although if you haven't got the shroud it won't be as effective but will still be better than nothing. The only thing you will need is a viscous fan spanner which costs about a tenner and remember the thread work in the oposite direction to normal.

Instead of that you could fit an electric one if you wanted to, at least that way it will only be turning when it is needed?. I have a Pacet one on my 300TDi controlled by an X-Eng thermostatic switch but the cooling system works fine so it hasn't had to cut in yet but it is there if needed.

i would still allways check system is full with bungs out and rad is hot all over core surface ,ive rebuilt hundreds in the past and all i was told ran okay as far as temp guage till last moment, and most i see are short of coolant except for header tank which allways seems to have some in ,and rads that arent cooling all over are very common

Thanks guys I've got a viscous fan on order. Only paid a tenner :) is it possible to fit without the spanner?
