Fitting a Double Dinn GPS/DVD into dash

With the impending sale of my Freelander I have put back the original head unit so I will be putting a post in the for sale section soon for my complete double din install. This will include everything you need to fit to your facelift freelander including the unit (obviously!) all fascia and wiring adapters, and nav software with maps. So keep your eyes peeled in the for sale section or drop me a pm :D

Can anyone tell me where the pink wire goes when installing a single DIN head unit? I've looked and looked through this thread with no luck !

Ive just aquired a late 2005 freelander sport (love it) but i would love one of these systems with GPS iphone compatible bluetooth, reversing camara etc whats the best system to get with working sat nav etc. I understand the idea just concerned on getting the best out of a purchase.

cheers in advance.

Bobtheboater I've seen some 'cheap' SatNavs on Ebay that support Android/iPhone & reversing camera and freeview (DVB-T), 3G internet (dongle subscription required) so you can Google search in the car! Chinese imports, non branded though so they look a bit cheap, especially the menu systems.

So if you're looking for a 'bargain', I'd consider something like this off fleabay for about £250: (iPhone support, GPS, Bluetooth, Steering wheel control support, camera support)
6.2" HD Car DVD Player GPS SAT NAV Stereo Double DIN Bluetooth Touch Free Camera 6951926102443 | eBay

It looks like the most popular chinese rebranded products are 'Xtrons' and 'Eonon'. Probably best to go for that, than a total no name generic sat nav in my view, as you're more likely to find other people with the same unit on internet forums if you have problems and need to ask questions.

There are so many double din units for sale, it's quite overwhelming. Just go to ebay, and search for DOUBLE DIN SAT NAV. Then on the left of ebay menu, deselect
the popular brands, choose 'buy it now', and scroll through tens of pages of double din units at pretty good prices. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for though.

If you want something higher quality and can pay more, it seems the popular brands like Kenwood/Pioneer/Alpine don't do DVB-T/3G yet, unless you extra expensive 'add-on' boxes. Having said that if you want to blow about £900 you can get an 8'' screened Alpine INE-W928R somehow squashed into a double din if you're prepared to have a big job to fit it, and it has no DAB radio built in.

Links to the two 'bargain' in car electronics manufacturers I mentioned who do sat nav double dins with all the toys.

Probably a good compromise if you want a bargain set up, and don't need 1000's of pounds worth of ICE. (In car Entertainment).

Ok, I am a bit of an audiophile, or should I say I was in the past. I will be looking at a single din flip out screen for my freelander 1.

I want to know what the actual quality of these cheap chinese head units. I made the mistake of asking on TalkAudio.com: The Leading Talk Audio Site on the Net which was probably a bad example as they are all audio snobs too.

I want all the features at a low price. I am prepared to loose a bit of sound quality for the given price but I don't want things like buttons that don't work or CDs that jump/ radio that doesn't tune properly/lack of clarity etc.

I'm guessing the sound quality and standard of parts will be the same on the double dins as it will the single dins so how do you guys rate these chinese versions?

My mate had a horrible beats head unit in his first car and it had loads of flashing lights and every time he went over some uneven road it stopped working. This I don't want.

Saw this Alpine single din online for £534 new from some online retailers, maybe in time a good second hand one will come up on ebay?
It looks like you pay a premium though for single din, perhaps because they aren't as popular? I don't know though for sure, it just looks like it.
Also because the unit is half the width, then naturally you won't get as many features in the big box double din format.

Alpine - Mobile Media Stations - IVA-D511R

I can see the advantages of single din vs a double din in a freelander, mainly that if it's installed in the top of the 'hole' in the dash for the stereo, it makes the screen higher up so you can see it better vs a double din screen, which is arguably safer but doesn't pop out and is fitted flush which some people prefer that 'factory' look.

I guess at the end of the day you get what you pay for, but it seems a bit excessive to drop £1000 on a screen when usually for a 2 year old model, the price had go down to £400 used, £500 new.
E.g a Pioneer Avic F930BT (double din), which is a quality 6.1'' touchscreen but now discontinued.

Personally if you're a bit way of the chinese units I'd stay well away (to avoid dissapointment as you'll expect higher standards if you used to be into ICE) and get a 2011/2012 model for a good deal online, or get one second hand
from an ebayer that has sold many items and has a good rating, like 100%. They you know they're selling you a legitimate used product and being honest.

I think an important thing to consider second hand is 'dead' pixels on the LCD screen. So always buy one with an advert where it's powered up and has some good close shots, not some blurry iPhone photos.

Ok buddy, think you have just told me what deep down I'm thinking. I more than likely will be disappointed.

When I pick it up on Saturday ill be able to get a good feel for things then and see what I can do. I do have a Tom Tom at the end of the day so GPS isn't essential. Also don't watch films in a car- just a novelty. I had an all singing and dancing pioneer flip out head unit at one point, even had an on board car co outer type thing to measure Gs and altitude and other bits like that but in reality I only ever put it on to show off lol (18/19 at the time)

I have the TomTom app on my iPhone and I'm very happy with it as map upgrades are completely free, every time they do a software update and it links with my contacts and integrates well with other phone functions. As my iPhone is jailbroken, I've also tweaked it a little...

As I didn't need navigation in my head unit, I decided to go with the Pioneer double-din model AVH-2400BT.. Excuse the dusty screen but here's my install...

The iPhone's other functions work well with it too and I've just started playing with the AppRadio function...

OK... here's the secret to making your HK system work...

The HK amp needs to know that the head unit is on to power up so you need to look at the original harness, find the purple/yellow wire and attach this to the switched live it should all come to life!

There you go... hope you're all ok :D
