Fitted a Safari snorkel to my 200TDI a couple of weeks ago and since then have noticed a small but noticable power loss.
So a couple of days ago i disconnected the 90 deg fitting that goes into the air filter housing so the engine is sucking air from the engine bay, obviously not perfect but just a test.
I now have my power back, especially noticable up really long steep hills.
So i suppose my question is has anyone noticed this before?

Didn't notice any power loss whatsoever when I fitted one to my 300TDI.

Guess yours is different though.

You haven't siliconed it up too much have you? or kinked a tube?

All pipes fine
Filter new and unclogged
I think i will remove heater box for a better look this weekend

I know it sounds daft but I did read somewhere that with the extra air getting / being forced in there may be problems with getting enough fuel in. Not sure what would cause it and not sure how viable that is.

Just something that I rememberd reading a while ago.

Why would you remove the heater box???? it int connected in any way to the snorkel. Did you remove the plastic wing grill before ya fitted the snorkel??

Because you cannot see the pipe where it runs under the heater box to the wing fitting.
I cant really see the pipe being at fault as it ran fine before the snorkel through the wing grill inlet through the same pipe.
Its really noticable, you know as the turbo starts to boost and it feels really strong well thats how it is with the snorkel disconnected, but reconnect and it feels flat still goes just not that same urgency.
Yes grill removed!

fitted a safari to my 90 when I had it and she ran slightly better if anything.

A Snorkel isn't going to have any efect on the performance of the engine unless it's blocked or of a significantly smaller diameter, than the std air inlet pipe.

Well i removed the washer bottle to give a clear view of the flexi pipe and all looks good.
So i have reconnected it for now.
Longish trip tomorrow so will see how it goes.
The flexi inlet pipe does seem awfully small in fact smaller than the one that goes from the air filter to the turbo.

Now I'm confused cos a safari snorkel doesn't have a flexi pipe? it fastens to the side of the wing over the intake vent and uses the existing ducting as fitted by LR.??

You are correct i should have worded it better it is a genuine safari moulded snorkel.
All the under bonnet pipework is the genuine landy stuff.
The flexi pipe i was checking was the std land rover one from inner wing to the air filter housing.

The 300Tdi safari snorkel has a flexi pipe.

It doesn't use all the original LR intake pipework. The snorkel is a sealed unit which bolts to the wing, but has a spigot type thing through the wing that you connect the (supplied) flexi pipe to. And then to the LR water drain (T-piece) thing. It doesn't rely on making a seal around the wing itself.

I didn't realise the 200Tdi snorkels were that different??

Was there a neoprene gasket on your one? could that have slid down and half blocked the pipe?

Also, is there a complete power loss all the time, or just under load or acceleration?

Yes new gakset fitted glued to wing before fitting so it couldnt slip down.
Ive posted on the aulro forum thinking they make the things over there so they should know, few replies this being the most logical one.

I have heard someone else in the UK also mentioning this years ago.I think the consensus was that the 200Tdi Defender uses a 50mm (2") inlet, and when you fit the Safari snorkel, which uses the original plastic mountings under the cover on the LHS,somehow the turbulence causes a lack of power.Hence when I fitted a snorkel to my 200Tdi,I used a stainless unit from Southdown, that does away with the original plastic inlet ducting. Also the ducting, because of its design, which just clips together, isn't really water tight, and luckily when I removed it from my vehicle,I also found that the ducting tube had rubbed through and had a hole on the under side, which I wouldn't have seen had I just fitted a Safari snorkel.
Wayne

As Wayne suggests the pipe is tiny, the inlet pipe on my old 2 litre diesel was only 2"
The pipe on the tdi from the filter to the turbo is 65mm.
So as i have a spare wing fitting moulding i will have a look at modifying it to take a 65mm intake pipe.
I really noticed the power loss on the way to Slindon Safari yesterday on the A27 and theres plenty of longish hills and it was just flat.
