Hello people. I have just bought a p322 on an 06 (3.0 TDV6) plate and its got a few problems. Its in metallic black, I need a rear bumper and valance and a set of rear lights as all three items are slightly damaged and need replacing. Secondly, when I am at 0-2mph, the steering is like a truck, heavy as you like. Any ideas? As a result, the steering wheel is showing heavy wear around the leading edge, could do with a good condition steering wheel. Finally, when its warm, it ticks over at 800rpm according to the tachometer but my ear tells me its too high, as if its on choke. Is 800rpm right at tick over? Feels, entirely based on the sound, that it should be ticking over at 600ish? Can anybody help me source my parts and/or address my questions?

Hello and welcome, Diesel engines usually tick over somewhere between the 700-850rpm mark, that's what I have found anyway.

Heavy steering could be a number of things, low fluid, low tyre pressure, wide tyres etc, so check your levels and pressures first
 
Revs will be linked to the speed your power steering motor is spinning so if it is low you may be suffering lack of umpf through the steering. Could be the motor itself is bloxed or any of the power steering system needing more revs to become useful. Id try turning the wheels stood still with different engine speeds. You could try a hand held rev counter to accurately measure the engine rpm from the crank.
Then again it could be any of the above. Or just too many pies littering the Wigan streets. :p
 
I'm assuming you have an L322 not P322.
Check the condition of the drive belt. This may have worn, making the steering heavy. The L322 should have light steering when parking.
If the tops of all the ribs on the pulleys look shiny, then the belt is likely to be the problem.

800 Rpm is the correct idle speed. A 6 cylinder engine sounds like it's spinning 50% faster than a 4 cylinder engine, because it has 50% more firing cycles in the same time period;)
