So new to the forum and this is my first LR. It's a 1995 P38a 2.5 DSE manual in basic spec. Since buying about a year ago I've been fairly busy sorting out niggles and upgrading parts. Upgrades/mods and fixes so far
  • Coils spring conversion with new shocks
  • Hot start chip
  • Late spec clear lights
  • New stereo
  • Modular wheels
  • Stainless cat back JE exhaust
  • Fog lights (although can't get them working even thought becm says thy are on)
  • Fresh fluids in diff, gearbox etc
  • Service.
  • Cubby box cup holder
  • Leather gear stick and hand brake
  • Wind deflectors
  • LR central brake light
  • On the repaired list.........
  • Clutch
  • Gearbox rebuild
  • New glow plugs and inlet manifold gaskets
  • Thermostat
  • Timing chain foot
  • About 4 billion bits of missing plastic trim and colour coded plugs.
  • Radiator
  • Battery box
  • Battery
  • Under trays
  • Booked in for headliner retrain and pillar covering on the 8th of April.
So as you can see. I've been uber busy. Still on the list of upgrades for me although any suggestions welcome.
  • Bf Goodrich tyres( not sure if I was AT or MudT
  • Decat
  • Remap( suggestions welcome)
  • Larger FMIC
  • Swap from Tan to black leather
  • Transfer box motor
  • AC clutch bearing and belt
  • Snorkel
  • New rear window to fix heating element.
  • Working drivers heated seat.
  • New bonnet and sort out some scuff and colour code some panels.
  • Un dented tail gate ( already purchased
  • I'm also in the middle or a rear light conversion which I will post when done to add side lights in the tailgate. Wiring done. Just modding the central lights

So not much then :)

Not a bad start as for the remap mike at dynachip he tolled me it was a shame my p38 was petrol cos he could chip it if it was diesel :D:D said he could make it go like the td5 iv picked up for the wife and I said it before and I'll say it again......it now goes like stink
 
Not a fan of chips. I prefer a map as it can be tweaked but I'll take a look and perhaps have a chat Mike and see what's what. I've read stories about the r380 box needing updated bearings etc for more power. I would also like to make it a 6 speed to help on motorway but not seen much about it yet apart from some very expensive conversions. Wondered if there was an off the shelf box from a later defender etc?

Bit surprised I've been here 5 mins only to have a snooty comment already about wheels without even a hi but I guess it's a forum so hey ho.

@ tony e The cars worth nothing so why be worried about loosing money on it.Plan to take it off road so don't want any extra electric stuff on it. The suspension was knackered when I got it which is why I removed it. Thought about chrome but think I may go down the rugged route than the more well trodden posh truck.

@ not enoughtime Not a fan of the standard side steps but rock sliders have caught my eye.

You'll probably knock a grand off first time you off road it. If it's bought as a toy it don't matter. My old man used to moan at me for "ruining" mine, but it gave me a couple of years good service and a few quid back when I sold it. Was good using it and I probably made my money back that way.
 
Nice plans - personally I like the EAS too (I would say that after putting a few hours into sorting ours out) but I can sort of understand why you want to stay with coils if you're planning on using it off road a lot. Maybe a good coil set up with the right rates might no more expensive than sorting the EAS out and gets rid of some of the off road compromises of the EAS as standard, even if you end up with compromises on road instead.

Other than that it looks like you've put a lot of effort into making it a nice motor and I'll be watching to see where this goes in the future. Looking forward to seeing it a lot less clean!

Thanks Rich. It's not that clean now. Being new to LR I'm not sure how far to go with axle articulation etc. I want to start with some good "clean" basic fun which is why I'm trying to get it 100% sound first. Hoping to get some ideas from other more serious off road p38 owners about good combinations spring rates/lift/wide angle proshafts etc.
 
I'm liking this project - quite like the idea of getting a P38 as my next project (hopefully less rust than a D2, and simpler than a D3!)
