First Landy and it’s a SIII 88 truck

hi, I am Olly.

I grew up in the back of an SII station wagon, many happy memories and have been hankering after one for oh only thirty years or so.

Just picked up this up. It’s a SIII petrol from 1980 with a 21/4 lump but don’t think it’s the original engine.

Never actually driven a series before so the twenty miles home was fun. But I got used to it, and I got two LR waves and one flash

No big plans for it other than to enjoy noodling around with it. Lots to learn. A few little things to sort. Will start a thread when I do.

Hello Olly, welcome to the zone. Like you, I always wanted an old series ever since I drove a friends s2 swb pickup several years ago and couldn't believe how bad it was but still running. My pride and joy is a series 3 lwb station wagon that looks like a skip with windows. The rear side windows are held in with moss and everything else is held together with hope and prayer. Good luck with your landy, don't do too much to bling it up, it'd be like sticking a wig on a pig.

I always wanted one as my uncles and grandad had one each (amongst other military vehicles), I had and still have small models of series landys, my nan had the roof of one on top of a container on the farm, a guy rents another container with a defender and series in it for his son for when he comes of age. My old scout leader had a 2a, older friends had RRCs and fenders.

It all just made me NEED one. I was always going to get something old, it's the smell and sound that's so appealing. Mine too has moss in the windows

Welcome Olly, as Col said, don't bling it up too much, just sympathetic maintainance and it'll continue looking great.

but fear not, I won’t

I was thinking the 5-spoke wheels (discovery?) were a bit modern but they’re growing on me. She is a bit of a Heinz 57 anyway so it all adds to the character!

It’s got a tiny steering wheel which wants to be bigger IMHO. Dash wiring is interesting, featuring (as far as I have discovered) a temp gauge mounted in an old paint-pot, which is independently powered via a rocker switch - along with the fuel gauge and probably a couple of other things. Oh, and a push-button start only the push button is loose and has to be fished out from behind the instrument binnacle, then tucked away again for safekeeping

Sounds great, good British bodging at its best. I put a smaller steering wheel on mine cos there was just no leg or elbow room with the original. I'm all for originality but some things have to change for safety .

Me too, but a 12” Mountney?!

I think mine is a 14 inch mountney. There isn't a lot of alternative choice. It does look a bit out of place but I'm big and fat and driving whilst squeezed behind the original wheel was difficult. When I first bought my landy, I remember thinking, Christ, it's a tight squeeze. I must have been a lot thinner when I first drove one 30 years ago.
