So first day back at work and winter cold has killed battery (I think) managed to jump it with a NOCO which i bought because I thought it may be on its way out, I'm at work until 6.30pm this evening and leaving again at 4.30am tomorrow so I'm limited as to where I can buy a battery and ordering online for next day means I can't fit a new one until Wednesday evening so don't want to rely on NOCO for 4 starts. Would this be ok for a Defender 90 TD5 with no accessories??

Thanks so much for advice

My advice, if you buy from halfrauds, take a multimeter with you and only get one that's 12.6v or higher. They're supposed to maintain them regularly if they sit on the shelf. I think most don't bother. Once it's dropped to 12.4 through lack of use, it's already dead - it might work for a while.. 'oh we'll swap it if it fails in the warranty time'.. sure, but do you want the hassle?

I fitted the same battery this time last year. No issues with it so far… It’s bigger than the standard in terms of physical size too so you won’t fit two in the seat box if you have a split charger. It’s on offer as well.

That Halfords battery would be good.
Like @Knappster said it's larger than standard but will fit under the seat on its own.

The NOCO will start the car no problem, you might need to recharge it after 2 or 3 starting operations, but it will work perfectly.
Is the battry voltage up around 14V when the engine is running ?
This indicates that your alternator is trying to charge the battery.
If after your run home, does the car start on the battery ?

I haven't got access to a multimeter as in middle of house so my whole garage is in storage, but I drove the car for 25 minutes after jumping with noco and it did start so I think alternator is good, I'll get the battery and fit it in Halfords carpark and see what happens tomorrow morning 🤞🤞

Thanks for advice and reassurance of battery choice an NOCO, nice to have a second opinions, cheers guys

I find these the best for batteries.
Good prices and they pioneered mail order batteries apparently.
It's about £8 for delivery.

That is what I have on my D3, started to get weak after a couple of years (always short 5 mile commutes) so took it back to Halfords, swapped on the spot with zero issues, new one been one there a couple of years and all good.
The previous (Exide Iirc) 019 to the Yuasa also got weak, so that is what now powers the series 2, tight fit under the seat but it is still going.

My boss does not have a good word to say about Yuasa on the trucks, and have also read the vibes kill them if rear chassis mounted, but my own experience on cars is pretty good.

Thanks everyone, had to get the halfruads on, as I couldn't wait for mail order, battery has started the car three times now so think it will be fine, although i did have a few issues - the battery is lower so the than the previous one so the nuts on the J rods that hold the clamp bar down ran out of thread before clamp was tight so its loose - will pack it out with nuts at the weekend, second issue is that the terminals are on the front side of the battery rather than being in the middle like my last battery, so the terminal clamps are now only just clearing the clamp bar thingy and its too close to potentially shorting for my liking so will have to get the electrical tape out at the weekend, and lastly the angle at which the positive had to go, means the secondary lives in the black conduit now rest over the battery again a potential source of a short if these rub for a long time

Nothing I can't live with, but just in case this is helpful for others choosing this battery

Cheers Chris
