First Car, First Landy?

Hey,

I'm 22 and I'm looking at buying my first car. I've got no kids, dogs, wife etc to worry about. I don't think I'd be doing any off-roading and mostly driving in and around town areas; not much long distance.
I grew up with my Dad having a Defender and I've loved them ever since.
I can afford about £4000-£5000, so I think I could get a decent 90 300tdi.
I'd love to have one but unfortunately I dont know a lot else about Defenders so I'm unsure if having one at my age/experience is a great idea.

Opinions welcome, but please be patient with me, I'm far from an expert.

Fisrt step, why don't you phone around some insurers (or use Cheap UK Car insurance and home insurance quotes comparison from Confused.com. etc) and get some quotes ...

ok done the insurance quotes bit, mostly around 1k but I've managed to get a few for less than £800, and one at £700.

If you're getting a Defender, get classic car insurance. You've over 21 so you're eligible.

All the cover is the same, you don't have to limit your milage too much (if at all), and the cover's really good.

I'm 23 and I pay just over £400 a year fully comp for my defender using NO no-claims bonus and mileage of about 6000.

I'm insured with Lancaster and have found them very good. They even do a specialist Landrover scheme that (I think) covers greenlaning and off roading. Check them out. Let me know how much!

Unfortunately I'm not eligable with Lancaster because I haven't had a license for over 2 years BUG,R

Shame about the 2 year licence thing. It still might be worth looking for classic car insurance though. I don't think they all need the two year thing, and it works out much cheaper if you can get it.
