Hello,

Im gona try and find a oil leak on the discovery but i want to clean the engine first. I'm told a good way to do it at home is spray with deisel then jet wash a couple of hours later....is this correct?

All comment welcome here, thanks for any good advice you can give.

Find the leak.
Fix the leak.
Move on to next problem.

I't gona be the steering box that also leaks... B£$%@cks.

Get on
Get it DONE....lol

In the meantime i'll carry on with the new brakes n suspension.

Brake cleaner is very good at clearing oil. Thick muddy oil will probably need jet washing, scrubbing off or similar. I find that industrial de-greaser is pretty good, it's like strong washing up liquid.

But don't get it too clean, it will cease to be a Land Rover if you do!

Most (diesel) Land Rover engines are perfectly happy to be washed with a pressure washer, which takes the mixture of road dirt, mud and engine oil off quite nicely. I tend to do mine like this, and use degreaser etc. rather sparingly as it's expensive.

I have some gunk and a water pressure pump so i'll give that a go when i get to it,
The rocker cover looks fine, i have an idea that there is a loose pipe or connection.

Gunk I hear is good if yiu go to a carwash that does steamcleaning theyll do it should be too dear I got engine degreased body washed and steam sprayes near the chassis for 15 quid in mallusk but unless you have a very big snorkel I diubt youd drive there

I just stick with standard gunk, nice and simple and then just steam clean it away!! :)

+1 Good old gunk work it in with an old brush op
Then you can just wash it down with a hose pipe the gunk breaks up the oily particles allowing you to just rinse of,

The working of the brush helps dissolve the oily residues the more you work the brush to agitate the cleaner it will become :);)

+ 1 for Jizer, does not smell as bad as gunk and theres gallons of the stuff at work !

Thanks for responses,

I do have some gunk that i bought so i'll give that a go.
There are two serious leaks 1 = steering pump and 2 = ?

The steering fluid get stollen by the steering fluid faries who decide to drop it all over the floor in large puddles and its not cheap as we all know...
I need a decent thread on how to repaire steering pump or to purchase a recon from a reputable person.

Can i leave the gunk brushed on the engine for a couple of days or will this do damage to pipes and wires?

All i want is a decent working discovery 1 = a life time of work....lol

Can also use good cheap white spirit and a stiff brush, get the cheap stuff from Wilkinsons, works as well as any expensive stuff, then wash off or wipe clean with cloths.
Degreases as well so able to paint engine afterwards.
Had bad oil leaks on my 110 (now oil tight.....mostly) from rocker cover (though had already sorted that one but leaked again after several months), oil filter, vacuum unit to block, fuel lift pump to block, and rocker filler cap was loose...replaced seal.
Gaskets harden with time now all replaced and staying oil tight. :)

If you got the time to put it on you got the time to take it off:)

Check hose connections and crimped joints probably a pipe leaking .

Hi Dragonwalker,

Not heard that before.

Tis only a temporary thing, will faff it in the long run, best bet is to get a re-con box from someone like Paddocks or if you're not pressed for time take your box into a steering pump specialist local to you, as long as your casing isn't cracked should be OK ...
