Finally got another Land Rover!

I made the bumper my self using a winch tray from another bumper, some box section and chequer plate. My intention is to add a portion to the bottom of it once I have made the steering guard so I can do it such a way that they work together.
Quite a small pic, but it looks smart. What dimensions did you use?

PS : Got any more pics?

That's a nice Disco Dan.
I bought my 300Tdi last October from a Gumtree ad. It had been off the road for 9 months and had no Mot. It is a '97 and it started, but I couldn't drive it due to lack of MoT.
I paid £750 for it and when I first drove it I found the gear lever was 'floppy', the diff lock wouldn't engage and it pulled very slightly left under firm braking. So I took it to my local MoT station 1/2 a mile from my home expecting it to fail. The MoT guys are L-R enthusiasts, so they knew what to look for. It passed with some minor advisories. It had a slight grease leak from the RH front hub hence the 'pulling, three brake pipes had minor corrosion, there were two small windscreen chips which were not in the driver's vision and there was a small rust spot in the LH rear door frame adjacent to the lock.
I got the windscreen chips done for £20. I bought the brake pipes for £20 and fitted them, draining and re-filling with new brake fluid. The hub seal cost £5-00 including a new lock washer and it took about 50 minutes to remove the hub, wash the bearings, fit the new seal and re-fit. Then I fitted new front brake pads.
The floppy gear-shift was a broken bias spring bracket which cost £11-00 complete with new springs and whilst the centre cover was off I removed the diff-lock lever, freed it off, greased it and replaced it. Just a mornings job for both items.
In addition I did a small localised patch repair in the RH sill using a 4" x 1.5" steel patch.
Otherwise it is rust-free, but I mixed 3 litres of old engine oil with 2 litres of Wayoyl and set my compressor to 60 psi. Then I filled the Schutz gun with this mixture and liberally sprayed under the entire rear arches, all the rear floor, inside both sills, in fact just everywhere possible up to the bulkhead. Then I did the front cross members and front of the chassis. I just have the tops of the inner wings to rustproof when the weather is better. I found a pair of PIAA Driving Lights with 100 w bulbs in my spares cupboard left over from a rally car so I fitted them as well.
My reason for buying this L.R. was because I need to tow a variety of trailers like my glider trailer, my car trailer and a box trailer. It would have cost £1100 just to fit a fold-away tow bar to my road car, a BMW, and that would simply have been money down the drain. I now have a super Disco with only 108,000 miles on it, this supported by MoT's and invoices (and it's excellent general condition), so I am very pleased. Then I joined this friendly forum.
Next will be some AT tyres when the good ones on it wear out. Here it is:

That looks very good indeed. The great thing about them is you can fix them at home, as you have found out.

Right, a bit later than previously advertised:

How it is just now:

It used to have a light bar on it, which looked alright, but not great:

I will make something else at some point.

I found some pictures from July 2014 when I was doing MOT work and about to move house....

Usual inner wing rot:

Bit of weldy weldy and some paint:

Having to tidy up after cowboys  In both cases the burs were filed down:

Not bad, really. I presume it's been through a couple of MOTs? Leaning toward box section myself. Couple of cuts, couple of brackets, seal up the ends, nice and simple.
A bar is a bar, it's nice to keep it simple and cheaper than the bumper, in case you need to use it.

Yeah, it isn't finished yet, it looks very odd from the front as there is so little depth to it.

Aye so with the realisation that at this rate it will be winter before I know it, I thought I'd get my finger out and get the Discovery on the road. Some time ago the driver's door mostly fell off so I took it right off and welded it up and painted it:

That was a few weeks ago, the other day I removed the plastic sill cover as I was planning to replace the sills with box section anyway and it looks like I will certainly need to!

Then today I had a spare hour but the sky looked like this:

So it stayed like this:

I am thinking about making a sort of half tent so I can work on one side at a time in rainings, we shall see!

Some scaff poles with feet on and some side braces should do unless it gets very windy ...
That's basically what I had in mind, I have a load of 1 1/4" tube. It gets very windy but also gusty, which is what rips the tarp to bits. I could make a more solid structure but I'm going to build a shed very soon anyway, but I need the Landy to haul materials!

An apex is often good against wind, if you know where it's coming from.

Yeah, see if I'm going to build a complete up and over arrangement that will be robust enough it would basically be a shed and I am going to build one very soon anyway so I don't see the point. I have some timber I can use to make a work area and I will just have to go with that.

I have also been considering colour choices. I know I painted the door black but that doesn't really mean anything: it needed paint and I had some black, it can easily be changed. This is along the lines of what I am thinking:

To be honest, it will probably end up being the gloss black that is on the door. It's not a great hassle to paint it again anyway at some point in the future. I just want something that is a little more interesting and unusual than a basic colour on a vehicle. I am open to any suggestions and ideas but I don't have masses of time to spend on it so the likes of airbrushing loads of detail all over it is not an option despite how incredibly cool that would be!

Yesterday there was still much rain:

I did de-rusting of the roof bars but I did not take any pictures.

Today there was no rain and a sun in the sky so I uncovered the beast and took the other door off and found more rust:

I will weld it all up and do the box section sill mod, but there is no 120x60 on the island so it looks like I will have to go with 100x50 and some 10mm flat bar. I did consider folding up some 3mm sheet but I really can't be arsed :D

I will need to add some tube to the sills to act as side steps and I think I will also add some high lift jacking points.

The interior is very wet and has been for some time so I will be taking the carpet out probably plating up most of the floor  I anticipate the carpet will be unsuitable to reuse so we appear to be heading in the direction of a stripped out, jacked up Discovery :D:D:D
