Hi all,

Collecting my first Defender (90 XS) tomorrow after a year of thinking about it!

Strangely I am also a VW fan (don't hold this against me!) and still have my 95 Corrado VR6 (although its in bad shape at the moment) so this is going to a big change to say the least!

So you'll probably see a few questions from me in here, once I decide what I want to do with/where to take the car. First job on the list is to put steps at the back so people can get in without hurting themselves!

Can't wait to start driving it somewhere not so flat!

Nice one, I'm sure you'll love the Landy just as much as your Corrado. I always wanted a VR6 but had to settle for a 150Tdi Golf. :D

Whereabouts are you?

I wouldn't recommend 'specially as it's your first Landy, you go out green-laning alone .. at least until you have some experience of 'reading' the track and are prepared to get out, walk, check it out and happy to reverse back out .. ;)

There's loads of people from on here all over UK (and beyond!) who'd be happy to take you out and show you basics.

Os maps for a bout a tenner.Where are you based?You wont have any local lanes but you can go out into essex or with the herts lot or in to kent etc.Then check the legality of the lanes wiyth the relevent council rights of way officer.Or just go with ssome folks off here.Much easier and more social!

AT the risk of sounding a bit dim...what does recovery gear actually contain? Winches etc? If anyone can point me in the right direction of some more information that would be great.

Already ripped out the crap Land Rover stereo (glad all the connectors are ISO!) and will be putting my old Alpine in there this evening.

While inspecting the car I did notice a little rust under the door sills and at the back underneath the bumper...will need to treat this of course asap!

Other than that its really fun to drive, seats are comfy...clutch is damn heavy but I'm sure I'll get used to that!

That's what I had assumed...although if it been a normal 6 yr old road car that had rust I would have walked away!

Looks like its just on the surface so a good treatment and touch up should sort it.
 
get yourself an inclinometer so you know when your about to roll over and ruin your nice paint job .be prepared **** happens!! Go out with someone whos got some experience like mentioned above but not with a nutter (until you have a bit of knowledge at least).
Most important of all well done nice truck mate have lots of fun and get it mucky!:D:D:D

You need a decent tow rope or recovery strop and summit to tie it onto.

Get a rope, Not just strops, they are much more versatile than just strops.

A decent 6 meter 24mm 8tonne rope,
Possibly a 8 meter lifting strop,
A pair ofrated shackels,
A pair of jate rings, Front,
Tow ball or jate rings any decent rated recovery point at rear. Jai
