ive renewed most of my eas,new springs arnott gen 2 set of 4 £250,pump seal kit £30,4 height sensors £120 got a deal on them, new air dryer £35,eas disc and lead £15,the only part that hasn,t been done is the valve block, but im always looking out for a decent second hand one,and i,ll buy a rebuild kit for it. total £450 so far and my own time to fit them, coil conversion kit, about the same price, but hey everyone to their own

You can have mine after my coils are in. Want to make a bid? There also might be a compressor and some other bits going to, I suspect. After all, lowers the cost of the spring kit!

i agree, dont do it mate!!! your brick will be worthless. are you selling???

There are 3 1997 P38s on Autotrader right now: HSE spec, all 112-116k miles. The prices are £2200, £1790, and £2295. One has a spring converstion on it, and it's not the middle one!

Don't reckon it'll affect the price at all... If I got another P38 right now, I'd take the one without the EAS!

I now have a 90XS but my P38 i made a simple controller to do the suspension heights, four buttons, one for each corner and one button for "down". If i had done this at the beginning i would of saved £1600 that the dealer charged but never fixed, after four seperate visits. I think mine was the valve block, not bags, sensors, compressor(x3) they just wanted to take my money.

*BUT* I gotta say - the fact that there is a whole website devoted to EAS problems, and offering tools to combat them... that says it all!

What it says is that the community of P38 owners has found a way round having to pay through the nose at specialists and the dealers to get their air suspension back up and running again.

The EAS system on the P38 is simple and very easy to understand and maintain once you have taken a bit of time to learn it.

Personally I would not touch a P38 that had coils with a barge pole. Ive driven 2 that had it done to them and the ride was somewhat firmer but the biggest thing for me was just the fact that a major innovation of the vehicle had just been ripped out and tossed away because the owners of the vehicles were too stubborn, naive and tight to fix the system.

The bottom line is, you bought a P38, by the nature of it's design it had an air suspension system - like most things on these vehicles this system does go wrong from time to time - if you don't look after it then it will fault and get upset - I bet you had symptoms leading upto your problems but maybe ignored them??

These vehicles were stupid money to buy when new and you have to remember when buying them that you will need to be prepared to fork out to fix these things - if you want a simple car that just works all the time then buy something like that but don't go and buy a Range Rover then moan and moan when the air suspension goes wrong and then tell everyone your ripping out the EAS because it's rubbish - it's not, you just don't want to learn the system or pay out to fix it (not only that, you could FULLY refurb the system for less than the cost of a coil conversion kit).

Still, if you insist on making a mistake and converting to coils then let us know what bits are for sale :D

I have just cleared my rangie of the drastic EAS fault beeping at me whenever I start her up:D but thats for now,Ive had her for 4 yrs and for each year theres been an EAS fault, airbags, sensors,EAS pump,a lot of ****e if you ask me but then again I love the comfort of the airbags but when theres a problem I see red and want to convert to springs just to save myself the hassle,EXPENSE and to say the least the inconvenience of it all when rangie is off the road and school runs are out the window:mad:Last Sunday on our 70mile trip to our sons motocross practice day,I was driving rangie on the M1 @70 as you do and then she hit bump stops, nuisance, slow 35mph max,had only just there:mad: springs were in before I even got home I had made my mind up but we know a mechanic with the diagnostics so plugged her in and shes fine cost me 50euro but then again whats to say EAS can beep at me in the morning. It better not,ive another 70mile trip motocross practise day

All fair points Wills. The system is not complex, the whole Rangie is simpler than the 7-series Beamer I had. I don't mind fixing problems, but the simple fact is that it's just not reliable enough. I could replace every single item and I still couldn't trust her on a 600-mile tour.

After the coils are in I'll sell everything to offset the costs, but of course unless I find a leak in the kit after it's out I can't say with certainty which bit's wrong. I think the v/v block and compressor are good, and the fault is with a bag, the pressure switch, drier, or height sensor.

i have just recently changed mine to springs due to having the same reason, i needed reliability but do have to say the ride is still good just not as good when on air. I due intend to save up some money and buy all new parts for the air suspension so if i come to sell it then i will revert back.

fair point but if you don't like electro****ery then a P38 ain't the best choice of motor is it! Get a classic ffs! :D

Had an '88 3.5EFi for a year... that's what got me into Rangies! Great tank, all original gear, no tail corrosion. Lovely. But no good for high-speed M6 cruising. Didn't escape the electro****ery either - voltage regulator, starter motor and reversing switch all played up while I had it!!

The P38 is a great high speed cruiser because... EAS! ;)

Mind you, slip-streaming lorries was the name of the game with my 4.6, I might have been paranoid but I swear I could see the fuel guage going down when I ventured over 60! :D

Actually, I do believe if you count through the posts in this thread, you'll see that the 'don't do it' crowd is winning. S'up to you, but here's another don't do it. Fix it right and you'll be trouble free for the rest of your time with your rr - unless you're like me and keep your cars forever (literally). Then you might need to do work in about 6-7 years. Continue with bodges and you'll continue to hate eas.

ok - but assuming you just got it I take it you are new to P38 ownership - as such don't know what the ride quality is like when you have a fully functional EAS system??
