Final drive oil change

I have just bought my first Freelander - a 2003 TD4. I want to replace the VC unit and bearings but also to do oil changes at the same time.
The final drive unit - is it possible to remove the rear plate or will the sub-frames interfere? It appears that this is the only way to change the oil on this unit. I intend to use RTV silicone to re-seal and then fill as necessary. Comments on the possibility would be appreciated.

I've had the plate off when changing the carrier bearings....on a bench mind you.
Others have done it in situ....but you need to make sure you clean up all the old oil before you reseal else it may cause it to leak.
A lot of us now use one of the big fluid syringes to remove as much of the old oil before replacing with new

Before starting, remove the filler/level plug.

The cover does come off in situ, just work an old wood chisel gradually around the flange to break the RTV seal.
Use White Spirit to clean the inside of the casing and make 100% sure that the mating flange is clean and oil free. Apply the RTV to the cover and carefully move it into position and bolt up.
Leave it for about an hour before refilling.
I drained mine this way and it also gave me a chance to see exactly how much contamination of the oil there was.....luckily, the old oil wasn't too bad and the gear teeth looked ok from what I could see.

I suck the oil out with a pump thing. Easy to do and you have the option of dripping some down yer arm.

Thank you for sound advice I under stand about making sure the filler plug will come out ,
mineral oil does not last for ever and it is good to see how things are after all its second hand
