I have, yes. But it doesn't seem to have the calming effect that the fags provided...

(Ignoring the chuckles from America with your reference to cigarettes)

Well if you're not allowed to flop about on top of the wife you'll have to have a good tug - stress relief the old fashioned way! That'll calm you down...

...you might think that the health freaks have a hard time of it but I've been informed (mainly by the vegies) that if you eat salad like a rabbit you end up going at it like 'em too. Unfortunately "they" say impatience and frustration can only be got rid of this way if you can't eat pies, smoke fags (yes yes yes), and get plastered...

I finally got around to cracking on with fitting the door mirrors after waiting for the bits to be delivered and I was right all along. It turned out to be a bastard of a job. After looking at the screw heads in each of the top hinges and testing them, I decided the passenger side would be the easiest to do first. Several days of coating in penetrating oil didn't help much and what do they make screw heads out of? Chewing gum? I resorted to an impact screwdriver which loosened them but the captive nuts broke away from the clips, so I had to saw through them. It took an unbelievable 2 hours to replace the top hinge and fit a mirror to the passenger side. I wish I hadn't bothered, the view from the driver seat is poor. Half of the mirror is obscured by the windscreen pillar, the arm needs to be a bit longer. The mirrors are Britpart. The threaded holes, I believe are M6 nothing else fitted but even m6 bolts felt loose and wouldn't pinch up tight so I had to put some thread locking compound in. I hope no-one brushes past the mirror, it'll probably fall off.

thats because the thread is 1/4 unf

I bought 1/4 unf bolts especially but they didn't fit. To be honest the threads looked badly cut before I tried anything in them, typical britpart quality. I think I'll look out for the original series mirror arms instead of these defender lookalikes.

The captive nuts might also have had a bit of a bashing. Perhaps a tap would help clean them out. To test the suitability of the bolts you bought try running a decent nut down them (There should be a few you could borrow on the series 2 - just put them back afterwards!). Worse comes to worse if the captive nuts threads are too worn you could then go for a helicoil...

I think we might be talking about different bolts. The ones I'm moaning about are the one that bolt the mirror to the hinge. I bought new hinge bolts and captive nuts to fasten the hinge to the bulkhead, I have no issue with them just the crappy thread in the body of the mirror.

Oh right sorry - I had visions of the whole effing door going off with the mirror!

(Carry on - fine pair - swing 'em high - dig them heels in...)
