I've just done a scan of my landrover mk1 2002 using the mxiscan ms300, i now get 2 fault codes the original n/a and a second P0170, i looked it up in the book and it says fuel trim malfunction (bank 1) what does this mean and how do i fix it, or is it a garage only fix.

I don't know what fuel trim malfunction (bank 1) means, at least i know now the scanner works and gives me an actual fault code, for a while i only got pend:00 and n/a now i get P0170 aswell, i just need to find out what the problem is and fix it.

What engine is it? I'm assuming it's a 1.8 petrol. It means the mixture is out and the ECU can't compensate. Iirc 0171 is lean and 0172 is rich. 0170 is a generic mixture error code. Does it do it all the time or only above a certain rpm?
Check for air leaks in the inlet system.
Or the O2 sensor is playing up.

Thanks for the replies, it's a petrol engine, it's the first time i've got the p0170 code all the other times i've checked it when engine light as been on i get fault pend:00 and n/a.

I think it may be some type of air leak as when the engine is turned off i can hear a shhh as if air is escaping from the engine but i can't figure out were from, i've checked for splits/cuts and can't find any, i'll go have another look i may get lucky.

Don't think it is, i don't know alot about engines, 1.8 petrol 2002 with the coil pack, if that helps any.

The problem was sorted by replacing the front lambda sensor and emptying a bottle of cataclean into the petrol tank.

Lambda sensor also known as the o2 sensor or oxygen sensor.
