Good day everyone, I have a friend who is a farmer which has five defenders. All of them are 110 pick ups with the 300tdi engine. He has four farms so that may explain why he need them all. About a month ago I was visiting him I drove one which throttle response was quite bad. Then the other day I was there again. I drove a different one which felt very different its throttle response was much better than the other one and it also sound different. I asked my friend if it had a different engine but he said it was the same engine. The only two differences I noticed was that the one with the better throttle response had a snorkel and its intercooler's tubes was bigger. Could this be what made the difference? Thanks.

I don't think there is a problem with the one which has bad throttles response. I think it is how it is supposed to be but my question was if a snorkel and intercooler can make the difference in sound and performance.

The general thinking is that a snorkel car restrict performance a bit due to the air going in being subjected to greater friction traveling down the longer pipes, to counter this many snorkel's have a forward facing intake for "ram" effect when traveling at speed.
Your friends truck I recon may well have some performance upgrades, the larger intercooler pipes are a clue. Could also have larger cooler, turned up injection pump, up rated turbo and more. The 300 is a very tuneable motor in the old way not like modern engines where the ECU is just mapped.

Thanks for the reply, yes it has the ram type snorkel. I'll have a look under the hood when I visit him again. Does a performance turbo look a bit different than stock turbo? What other changes should I look for? I would assume that I won't be able to see a difference in the injection pump. Maybe a different exhaust or something like that? Thanks again

You will not see any difference at the FIP. Turbo could be as simple as upping the pressure some [ point at which waste gate opens] Up graded turbos have a larger impeller but it is only mm's, Case will have been machined out inside to fit new impeller. A larger intercooler is likely the be best clue. Exhaust may be straight pipe at the centre muffler position.

Thanks, I'll have a look and ask him too but I think he didn't change anything after he bought it from the previous owner.
