I have just bought a bloody huge bit of new steel winch cable for my Superwinch EPI9, it is bigger than the original and i have had to shorten it accordingly so it sits well on the drum, the bending radius of the cable is fine and it winds in well but my fairlead rollers seem a little narrow now, to the point that the cable isnt spooling well to the edge of the drum.
whoever fitted the winch and roller originally had put the roller slightly to one side of the drum as it looks like that was the only easy way to fit it, but what i want to know is how does your roller sit, is it exactly in the middle of the winch and how do the outer edge rollers match up to the edge of the drum?

please have a look and let me know so i know whether i am looking for a bigger roller set or just remounting and fettling the original one.

Ta muchly and i will even take answers from them there scottish fellas

rollers/hawse are often narrower than the drum but also should be centred.

make your own hawse!

Ta Mr N, looks like i will just be remounting the one i have then in the centre of the winch rather than sat a little to one side.

im running a lovely bit of 13mm cable now, very flexible for its size and i doubt i can do much to snap this one:D

snapped my old one 3 times in the last 6 months, hence the big one i have now, snapping is fine as long as you cater for it and stay out of the way, it keeps folks on their toes if they think they might die, stops complacency.

and use a winch blanket.... recommended at just about every paynplay centre, but very little often seen:confused:

(and they aint all using plasma)

synthetic is the only option for me, because i cba using a blanket and want to stand next to the winch rope, often actually holding/adjusting it whilst winching.

steel wire if treated carefully and with respect is fine and will last a long time, but sythetic is far less likely to be damaged on or off the drum than wire, it is completely safe and it floats.

cheers.
