Hi all,
I have a Freelander 2 TD4 GS and over the last 4-5 years I have had to replace the inter cooler 4 times. The mechanic I use is baffled by this and after asking around has not come across anyone that has experienced this.
Has anyone experienced this or know the reason for it happening?
Thanks

The first three times it just expanded like a ballon, this time it caused the end to come away from the body. It’s obviously a pressure problem but we don’t know how or what.

I am not a mechanic, but the guy who looks after my car has suggested loads of potential causes, this being one. He didn’t say if it was a difficult job. What’s your view?

Might have given you duff info there, apparently it has a ”variable nozzle turbocharger” to maintain the correct boost pressure. You could fit an after-market dump valve or a recon turbo.

Had my turbo changed a while back but it had 130k on the clock, its not cheap but peace of mind.

We did think about a new turbo, but at 170k miles probable not worth it. I’ll ask about the dump valve.
Thanks for your help

Here is a video I found

(not sure what language just watch the pictures) but with that milage it will be ready for a new one, they don’t last for ever

Purely economics. The body work isn’t great and the diff is going for the third time!!

A Freelander 2 is still a desirable vehicle, which keeps the prices up (actually still climbing slowly), even for tatty high mileage examples. I reckon it'll be worth more than you think, and you have to ask, what would you pay for an equivalent replacement vehicle?;)

My 2009 SE with 120k on it would sell locally for over £6k, although the body is nice, and the diff is newly rebuilt, amongst other things, although I do all my own work.
