Expedition...

Iv started looking and seriously thinking about doing an expedition, won't be for a couple of years yet, but want to start picking up mods now really.

Iv seen plenty of people doing these in range rover l322's but i carnt find many places that sell the stuff to fit,

also has any one got any pointer on how much I'm looking at this costing, iv got a rough idea, but until you actually get back, its difficult to put a true price on it.

also where did you go??

Me and my mate have both separately thought about it too, reality is it's doubtful either of us would be able to get anywhere near enough time off work...plus I've promised myself if I get a month off to disappear on the canals somewhere!

Fair play if you do go for it, if not the mods won't hurt!

Just read a blog from a bloke that drove a 2003 td6 range rover from London bridge to cape town, 22000 miles took 18 weeks, the story and pics are incredible, must b an amazing experiance, il try and find it agen, was an interesting read

Like I said I won't be doing it for a few years so want to plan it properly, and prob won't do it in a 4.4 v8 petrol either as petrol would be silly

That's quite a "loose" first post to be fair, really depends where you want to go! Last year I was in a similar situation myself, have decided to go to Morocco as it's 'different' enough to Europe but close enough to get there and back in 3 weeks whilst spending a decent amount of time there.

Rather than go it alone, I have also opted to join an organised tour through http://www.trailmasters.com who I went on a greenlaning weekend with last year in Wales.

As for preparation, the thing to remember is you won't be offroading the vehicle as such, I think it becomes a bit of a lifeline so you tend to take good care of it. Theoretically you could drive to Cape Town in a 15 year old Mondeo.

Cost wise, well depends where you go, if alone or on a trip, what vehicle you take and what you do to it. For instance, a big part of "the dream" for me is a rooftent, so I've spent around a grand on that + suitable roof rack - but you could pitch up a £50 tent every night.

The only thing you really need is to prepare the vehicle well (FULL service), fit some decent A/T tyres with strong sidewalls, and decide on a sensible but comprehensive spares package and tool kit. Other than that, everything else is optional.

Depending how Morocco goes, I then plan to do more trips, some organised and some solo. I definitely want to head up through Norway to play in the snow and hopefully catch sight of the Northern Lights.

Have a think more about where you want to go and what you want to do, but if you have 3 weeks in August and a couple of grand kicking about, why not join us on the Trailmasters trip this summer?

Ha i know it was fairly loose, but its only cuz its such a broad field to explore

I have pretty good AT tyres, so thats a start! oooo norway does sound good, missis parents have just done a cruise too see the northern lights, said they were pretty spectacular.

How many miles is the morocco trip?

I reckon circa 2,000-2,500 miles door to door? Depends if you drive through France and Spain, just Spain or ship the car down!

Are you driving there and back again or there and then transporting home? What are you going in,

Working out costings to morocco and back through France door to door is about 4200miles so about £1000 in fuel (LPG) dependant on it being avaiable

We're taking the overnight Portsmouth - Bilbao ferry on the way out, then driving 1,000km (650 miles) through Spain to Algeciras to meet the rest of the group. On the way back we are driving back through Spain again, taking the overnight Santander - Portsmouth ferry. Ferry cost is £1,000, fuel cost through Spain around £150 each way on LPG (probably £250 if running the V8 on petrol). UK leg is another £30 each way for us on LPG. The Morocco fuel bill is unknown due to a mixture of offroad/onroad use, but I would estimate £500 max. The trip itself is £640 per person, based on two people in one car.

As for vehicle, I am taking my V8 Range Rover Classic - it's a soft dash model on LPG. We will (hopefully) run on LPG through Spain for the journey there to keep costs down, the plan is then to go into Morocco with a full LPG tank as a reserve (in addition to 2x 20 litre jerry cans) and will run on petrol in Morocco, which is around 70-80p /litre.
